How do you find Carpenters or other service workers?

Hi,

How do you find say Carpenters in your area, when you are new there?

I was going to try getting recommendations from neighbours, watch man etc. Is there a better hi-tech way these days?

Also, if you have any personal suggestions/recommendations for a carpenter in Whitefield area, please send me their contact info.

ChicagoR2I, I found all these handy men by telling the security guards and our sriver whenever I needed one. If you stay in a community, ask the office and the guards.....also maids are also quite helpful here.
Please start making your own yellowbook of handy man.
that reminds me, I have seen many men dressed in red uniform with "Handiman" logo. I think that is a handiman company. try it.

I will provide you a no. tomorrow. U can check if this guy services whitefield.

Yes...maids are a good social networking engine in India.
here are 2 nos.-
Peter 9008095821(diificult to reach him sometimes)This guy has done repairs to kitchen cabinets to furniture for us. Very good work. Just got to haggle and make things clear on money part. He asks unreasonable labor charges sometimes.

Basha-9632126981-I haven't dealt with him but many people in our complex got a lot of furniture done by him.

References from friends/ word of mouth and one's own gut feeling ( if one is good at interpreting gut feelings) on meeting them.

Have you used carpenters for getting furniture custom made or is it for repairs and stuff. I was wondering if you have a cost/quality comparison of custom made furniture in Blr over buying from US? I am thinking of getting a toddler bed from here, have a feeling it might be cheaper to get it done in India. I have a pretty good idea of how the rates are in Kerala, but wondering if blr is expensive for such stuff.

we did get 2 kig size beds made here in BLR. But from infantry rd. furniture market.
Just to give you a rate comparison......a king size with box/drawers costed us 27,500 with delivery and the one without box costed 17,500. Excellent rubber wood material. Matrix is the name of the shop. excellent quality n service. I am sure a toddler bed, custome made here with rubber wood will cost you about 10-12k max. the bed you will get from there will be particle board and not anywhere close to the real wood being used here.
It is a good idea to get rest of the furniture like dining table, sofa, coffee table, etc.

it took him about 7 days to make n deliver the beds. if it is ready, it will be same/next day delivery.
you can rent furniture in Bangalore. it is not comfortable or good looking but something better than nothing.
