DirectI and Turakhia brothers

Post by gurusw »

I have been looking for a job in India, and I stumbled onto this website: http://www.directi.com/

I first thought it's a US company who has operations in India. Then I realized it's the other way round. It's headquartered in Mumbai. So why I am mentioning this company? - because I had never heard of them, I am in awe, and I thought some of you may like to know some of the facts here.

This company is founded by Mumbai-born Turakhia brothers when they were 16 & 18 years old - I am still surfing on Internet to find out if these brothers are educated in US/UK or in India.

This is a product company - not a services company - who has 300+ million dollars big in 11 years.

They have well-defined interview process (http://careers.directi.com/display/CAR/Software+Engineering+Positions) which may involve solving a coding puzzle (http://careers.directi.com/display/CAR/Coding+Puzzles):
[QUOTE]In-person Interview Schedule
Day Round Duration Positions
1 Algo + Tech Rounds 1.25 hrs All
1 Design Round 1 hr All
1 Pair Programming round 1 hr All
2 System Administration Round 1 hr Sr. Developers and above
2 Advanced Tech Round 1 hr Tech Leads and above
Optional Product Strategy case study round 1 hr Sr. Developers and above
Optional Usability and UI: UX round 1 hr Sr. Developers and above

They have a risk-free policy to join them!
[QUOTE]If you are up for it, we believe in putting money where our mouths are. Subject to your willingness, we may propose that you take a short leave of absence from your current stint and join us for two weeks to work with us here at our offices. If you select to join us we will pay you for your time here, and during the process we will be able to gauge mutual compatibility first hand. You will get a feel of the work environment here, and we will get a feel of your capabilities. This is a no-risk proposition allowing you to get a flavor of our organization before making a commitment.

They have expat recruitment: http://careers.directi.com/display/CAR/Expat%20Recruitment%20Program%20beta
[QUOTE]Fully furnished accommodation, close to the Directi office, at no cost for a period of 2 years from the date of joining
The apartment will have all the basic amenities and utilities you need
Apartment maintenance, cleaning, and your personal laundry, will be taken care of by an agency appointed by Directi
Electricity, water, gas charges will be taken care of by Directi
Relocation assistance and reimbursals for you and your spouse / significant other
Transport reimbursement in the form of cab fare for the first 3 months
Medical insurance
A cellphone, a monthly cellphone allowance and broadband internet connectivity
A travel allowance for you and your spouse / significant other to explore India (visit the Taj Mahal and other interesting sights / cities)
Catered lunches and snacks
Placement assistance for spouse / significant other
Sponsored trip back to your hometown for you and your spouse / significant other
Expats recruited as a part of this program will qualify to participate in our selective equity compensation program subject to Management discretion
Competitive compensation - Directi is known to be amongst the best paymasters in the country

And they boast of great work culture. ... 6.5 pingpong games per employee per month!

Anyways, all this rant because I am surprised. I was talking with a friend of mine last year or so, and he was bashing WITCHES for doing rote software work, and not producing any software product. The anger at that time was obviously directed at bad state of economy, Satyam fiasco, and Infosys hiring in China, etc. Not to mention outsourcing to India has negative connotation.

In that perspective, I am happy that there is a rising star on the horizon. We have some presence in Software industry that gives respect to education, intellect, and does not treat developers as commodity. In this forum also, there have been discussions about India not producing MicroSoft or Google. But times are changing, and whether you want a challenging job in India, or you want opportunities for your children in India; the time is on our side.

p.s.: This is not a solicitation. Did I say.. I am in awe!

It seems like a company with good talent (considering their focus on core Computer Science conceptes in Interview). But a lot of people from it are now looking for jobs outside (we are getting quite a few resumes). Not sure why. So, be sure check that out if you are considering this copany
