bunk beds or 2 twin beds..

Post by r2i_Jan_2008 »

space is not the issue. The room can hold a king bed too. My 5 yr old has a full bed now...but I want to change something....bored of the same thing. Want to get my 5yr old and 2 yr old into the same room.

I think bunk beds are fun (we had one when we were little) but maybe not practical.

less head space for the person sleeping down and mom having to climb up to make the bed are too big issues :)

Anyone tried it and really loves it....

I was also thinking about Bunk bed for 5 and 3 year olds. But dropped the idea as they sometime need Mom/Dad with them.

bunk beds or 2 twin beds..

We have a bunk bed bought from Ashley furniture. It's a twin over full bunk with metal frame. The lower one is a full-size bed used by our 4-year-old and the upper is a twin size by our firstborn. In a year or so, they will switch places.

It's fun for them and it saves a lot of space and gives more room. The only downside is making the upper bed, which we have to struggle a little.

bunk beds or 2 twin beds..

I got a twin over full loft bed for my younger one. This was when he was already 4.5 years old and even though he does not share a room with sister. It is a lot of fun for the kids as they make cave and fort and play other games. It looked like this one. The bottom full bed had casters (wheels) and is not connected to the rest of the bed, so it can be pulled out. If kid sleeps with head on the outer side, it is not as claustrophobic.

There are also beds that can be used as bunk bed and later side by side too. I would suggest not going for bed with attached desk, as the desk area gets too dark and surrounded on all sides. Attached dresser is also not a good idea.

Costco has a good price on this twin over full, but not sure if they can be used separately.

Another factor to keep in mind is whether the room has ceiling fan or might be getting one soon. My kid's room has a ceiling fan that operates with remote. My kids know enough that they do not play with the remote while on top bunk, but many times when they had friends over, I had to literally run to their room to get the remote away from other kid's hands. Once spilled chai on self and sofa thus. Also, check if the room ceiling is high enough for the child to be able to sit up in top bunk. Or, in the night when they want to go su-su, and sit up in the dark and call out for papa, their head will go boink against the ceiling.

If kids are 5 and 2, I would get a bunk bed with two pieces that can be used separately (side by side) too. These sell fast too on craigslist if kids get too big for the bunk bed or the novelty is gone in 2-3 years.

MV,

I never even considered the middle of the night su-su thing....one more downside.

My room has a celing fan too and thats a danger as my 2yr old is a handful. The room also gets very hot in summer ....now I am more confused.

Yeah, the kid sleeping in top bunk should preferably not need to go to the bathroom in the night. Getting kid out of the top bunk bed - by carrying or over the ladder, is a pain in the middle of the night.

If room has a ceiling fan and it is used, then IMO, a bunk bed is not a good idea if top bunk is going to be used actively for sleeping. In my case, top bunk was neatly set up with stuffed animals as shown in Pottery Barn Kids catalog. : )

IKEA has a low height "bunk bed". KURA bed.

Google "KURA bed reviews" for some interesting reviews, including this one.

A mom I know put a mattress on the floor below the bed, and uses it as a bunk bed for 2 kids. I would buy this, maybe even two, and have kids use them for 12-18 months, and sell on craigslist for half the price. Not bad at all, considering the fun kids and their friends can have and that a jumper rental for a day runs close to $100.

Luckily for me, no IKEA products costing more than $10 are allowed in my house. : )

Thanks MV. I am glad I posted the question.

This IKEA bed is very interesting....not my style but will look into it. Whats with the $10 limit ? I don't shop much from IKEA either.

Its turning out that bunks won't be a good option for me coz my older son still wakes up at night, 2 yr old is hyper and I trust him to climb up and down and the huge issue with the ceiling fan.
Maybe I should just disconnect the fan....hmm....

The room is big and empty now...had to throw his current bed (full) out in a hurry due to some issue.
Now I am thinking of fun & functional stuff that i need to buy.

Do you kids have a seperate study desk or they hang around with you in the living/dining area while they do homework ? How does mommy sit next to them if they get their own desk and need help.

Growing up we used to have a huge table across a wall with 3 chairs....each of us had seperate drawers etc. Cool custome made indian desk.

Is this in India or in US? I bought a bunk bed in India and the fan became a big security issue. Luckily, the room had AC, but still, sometimes you just need a fan and not the AC.

In US, my friend had bunkbed and as I understand the kids have fun with the bunkbed. Even though one can disturb the other, that is fun and closeness they get :-)

Yeah, the IKEA bed is interesting, but more like an interesting idea, not interesting enough to get the bed home and assemble it. :)

I knew custom made would come up soon in the discussion. Growing up, we also had most furniture custom made, as labor was quite cheap. I remember my first independent table had decolam on it. On the wall above it, I used to hang posters of Only Vimal, Raymond Suitings or Bombay Dyeing ad., cut out from Illustrated Weekly and other magazines. Karan Kapoor (son of Shashi Kapoor) used to be the Bombay Dyeing model. One ad had him in a towel. Yeah, Bombay Dyeing was known for fluffy towels too. Deepak Malhotra used to be the face of Vimal. He later went and acted in Lamhe with Sreedevi. Aiyo! That was a big mishtake. Because he needed to speak, and he spoke, so pathetically, calling her "Pallo" (short for Pallavi).

Hmm, ceiling fan... No... disconnecting might not be a good idea, as it is actually needed if kid is sleeping in top bunk, as air from floor fan won't get that high, and A/C, if any, might not be on all night. Give up on the idea of bunk bed... : ) Another thing is it really crowds the room from a visual perspective... See, I am trying to make you feel better about not buying such a fun thing : )

The desk or table thing - buying any furniture gives me lot of tension, as we both have specific tastes or opinions. Color, real wood or particle board/wood, night stand or no night stand and so on. So, I always go for buying in one shot - bed of full size for future growth, and desk to go with it that kid can use till high school.

After a lot of research on different kinds of beds, including trundle bed, day bed etc etc, we settled for Captain's bed with bookcase headboard and two draws under it that are huge and go till half the depth of the bed. There is a small door at the base of the bed to access the space behind the draws. That is my favorite part - all that space (half the size of the bed) to store stuff, and not visible at all to moms who come to pickup their kids after playdate. Got a matching desk with hutch from same catalog, as tough to later go search for similar color desk. Desk should be at least 24 inch deep. In retrospect, hutch is actually not a good idea.

The headboard is the best part - can put a night lamp on it, kleenex, books, and all the precious possessions kids just cannot sleep without.

This is the picture. It is available in more colors. Better to go for only two draws, rather than four draws, as four make the bed too high.

Do kids use the table or desk in their room - not much till 2nd grade. If kids room is upstairs, then even more so. My older one started using her room desk in 3rd grade. My younger one still does his homework wherever I am. It hardly takes him 20 min, so it is OK. Around end of 2nd grade, I try to be involved in homework only to briefly check at the end and sign it if needed. I actually find school homework to be mostly a waste of home time. Different topic.

Hey, got a bit carried away with ads from my youth... : )
