IT Strategy Consulting jobs - Advisory roles, not IT/software development

Post by r2i_real »

I am presently working for one of the top 5 consulting firms in IT Strategy consulting, and hold MBA, PMP, ITIL certifications. Though my background is in IT Infrastructure, for last 2 years since my MBA, I have been working strictly in IT advisory roles mostly for our Financial industry clients (IT service management, IT processes etc.). My role involves working mostly with the senior management and doesn't deal with the actual development/ implementation.

I am planning to r2i in the near future, and contemplating my job options in metro cities, especially Bangalore.

I am seeking some help/information on the potential opprotunities for this type of career in India. While big consulting firms such as KPMG, E&Y, Accenture, IBM etc. (or Indian counterparts...Wipro, Infosys etc.) have a strong indian presence, do they have established indian practice in IT strategy consulting/advisory? Any leads on how to start job search in this area? Any reference for recruiters/companies with focus in this category of jobs?

I assume there are lot of folks in this forum with similar career/backgrounds as I have, so hoping to get some tips.

Thank you for your time and information.

India IT services companies in India-3 category dont have a dedicated IT strategic consulting practice as far as my knowledge goes. Infosys consulting will come pretty close but they are not purely focused on it as a group. For ITSM practice you can find openings with them as thats one growing area.

IBM/Accenture/EDS can provide better avenues here as they are involved with clients at partner level rather than tactical provider level which most of the Indian IT companies are. For ITSM practice too the role/profile should be better than what ITSM practice of Indian IT services companies will offer as these companies are much more mature in IT delivery.

I doubt whether there are IT strategic consulting jobs in big-4 in India. All of them have an advisory practice in strategy and operations domain but I doubt whether these practices have an IT component. Even if they have I think they will be more oriented toward IT enabled business processes improvements like SCM/CRM and not IT infrastructure.

In my previous post it appears that one should can Infosys consulting for ITSM practice. I meant to say that for IT strategy type profiles Infosys consulting is the best place among India-3 group. They were set up with this high end business consulting mandate and to take Infosys to business partner level from simple low end offshore provider level.

All Indian IT services companies have ITSM practice so it wont be difficult to get a ITSM related job but these groups are more into tactical consulting though they love to call it IT transformation service. The field is evolving and has a bright future as more and more companies are trying to cut cost in IT. But IBM and Accenture are better placed in this domain than Indian IT services companies.

Question for you:
After your MBA, did you then leave your current job and went into IT consulting roles ? Was it by choice ?
Or did you move within your own company to doing such roles ?

I also completed MBA around 2 years back, but really doing the same IT stuff as before. But really looking for avenues into going into mgmt roles.

Any advise helpful
Thks

FB2020,
I did MBA to switch career from IT engineering to IT strategy/advisory kind of job , and luckily, I was successful. The best way to get a consulting job post-MBA is on the campus, that's how I got it: during on-campus recruiting.
Since you are past that stage, the best bet is to apply to consulting firms that have focus in IT advisory work more than implementation such as KPMG, Deloitte etc. These firms do implementation work as well but mostly on packaged solution space (SAP, CRM etc.). Accenture and IBM are very heavy in solution implementation/deployment work and anyone with technical background (MBA or not) can potentially get sucked in same kind of roles..

Hope this helps

It does help. Thanks.

I would think though that these types of advisory/consultant roles would require some level of travel, correct?

Typically a consulting role requires a significant amount of travel...esp in advisory role
If you have a very specialized/docused skill set, you might be 'up in the air' across the country all the time..
