Need recommendations for wireless datacard

I'm going to Bangalore for a couple of months and wondering about my internet options. Previously I had posted a question about wired connection with UPS.

It looks like it might be a hassle to get a guy to install a UPS/inverter for my apartment in b'lore, and time is of the essence - I need internet connection pretty much the day after I land (for work purposes) and given the monsoon season I don't want to be without backup power.

My plan is to buy a powergorilla external laptop battery (they claim it can power your laptop for up to 6 hours) and a wireless data card for my laptop.

Can you guys give your opinions on the datacards currently available in India? Which one is fast and what kind of speed can I expect? For example will I be able to view streaming data on my brokerage interface?

And is there any downtime with these datacard services? For example if there is a city-wide power outage, will the datacard still be connected to an internet signal?

I've been using it for 5 months now, initially it sucked, now they have upgraded network
and hardware and it works great. Rs 3K + 850 per month.

How fast is it to get signed up for the service and walk out the door with the usb device? There's a Reliance center close to my place.
Do they have a lengthy application procedure and ask for your photos, photocopy of passport, etc?

For the Tata service user: have you been able to receive signal even when there is a power outage (wondering if the ISP's base station goes down when there's a general power outage).

These wireless data card services (EVDO technology) run off of the cell phone signal. I have Reliance NetConnect wireless USB and it works fine for my needs. The USB is essentially a cell phone without voice interface. It has its own cell phone number too. So, if the cell phone signal is great in your area, then the USB download speeds will be good too. And because it runs off of the cell phone infrastructure, power outage does not impact its connectivity.

I tried Photon+ and Reliance a couple of weeks back in Blr.. Reliance seemed to work better

I am using Reliance Netconnect. Very reliable and no issues at all with my laptop. Have used it in a lot of places in Blore and Bombay too. I trust it better than the BSNL connection I have at home. But my husband was not able to use it with his office laptop. Some kind of firewall issues. He is able to use BSNL wireless at home but cannot use the Reliance device. Just wanted to let you know.

I have tried BSNL 3G and Tata Photon+. BSNL 3G beats Photon+ pants down and any other thing one is wearing. I got speeds of 100-200 Kbps with Photon+. With BSNL 3G, I got about 600 kbps and goes to 1 -1.2 Mbps during the times I measured. Needless to say, being the brilliant guy I am, I got Photon +. What I thought were BSNL problems was actually my laptop problems, though the BSNL software does "seem" to be a bit more flaky than the one for Photon+ though its all the same manufacturer.
