I see a lot of my friends having dogs as pets. This thread is for members to share their experiences with their pets. I will start with my share.
I don't want to mince words here. I hate pets and mainly dogs. What kind of creatures are these dogs? Obsequious, servile and ___ licking creatures. Don't we have them enough in humans? Why do we need to groom an animal for that?
I have got acquainted with different types of dogs, forced by my visiting friends. The main types I have come across through my friends are poodles, golden retriever, labrador and german shephard. Poodle is the one I hate the most. I hate to even see this inglorious basterd.
Golden retriever, Labrador are OK. They mind their own business. German shephard is very territorial. Now you can start to throw stones at me and praise your dogs .

You hit a nerve there. I hate pets. I have broken friendship with people who would bring their dogs with them, despite us indicating that we do not like animals inside our home. How can someone live in a house with animal hair all over the floor, carpets, bed, chair, car and sometimes even in their food.
I cannot understand why people would waste so much time, money and love on an animal when millions of poor humans could benefit from it. Adopt a homeless child instead.

I can relate very well to what you say. I opened this thread after I got pissed when my friend washed the pet in my sink. Also, after the dogs leave my house, my wife spends a lot of time removing the dog hair from the carpet, sofa etc. I am not strong enough to break friendship. Also, I find my friends getting offended if I say something about their pets.
Inspite of all this the trend is alarming. The American desi is adopting dog as a trusted companion more and more, once he gets old. Most of the empty nesters are going to have dogs I believe. It is also a security device for them.

I too hate dogs. And when the dog owner says "Don't worry, it doesn't bite.", I say in my mind "Kaat-ta nahin toh rakhaa kyon?"

I don't have a dog or a pet now and used to have the similar kind of prejudices expressed by OP and chakra.
But I guess one's perspective changes for the good if one were to be privileged to have had a dog at home especially when growing up. I was lucky to have had that experience of a wonderful german shepherd and only a true dog lover will understand the joy and fun that a good dog brings to the household. Which other animal (humans included) can show such unconditional, uninhibited love and loyalty to his master. I truly think the one living being other than another human, one can connect so much is only to a dog. But when our dog caught a lethal illness and literally fasted and wasted away before us (and ultimately put to sleep), it was as good or as bad as losing a household member, and none of us could bear the thought of losing another so we didn't get one more ever again.
I fully agree that dog owners have to be responsible for all actions of their pets (including collecting the poop in public places), and have no right to thrust them on unsuspecting friends and relatives, saying they are harmless and startling them.
That said, every one is entitled to their views and prejudices however wrong they may well be.:)

Breaking friendship is hard, and I can relate to your comment. I too am not direct enough to declare one day that we are no longer friends. It happended gradually. I indicated that I do not like their pet in my home. They stopped coming to our house. We did not insist that they come. And slowly they faded away from our circle of friends.

Am not surprised (at their behavior).
Most dog owners subconsciously consider their pet as an extended family member.
If it came to choosing between a friend and their pet, most would not hesitate to choose the former. how ever I would never take a pet to my friend's home unless he too was a dog lover and explicitly wanted and enjoyed the pet's company.

One of my friends (a dog owner) got upset when I referred to his dog as "kutta". I asked him "Kutte ko baandh rakhaa hain ki nahin?" when I visited him. The friend said "Don't call him Kutta. Call him Rocky. And Rocky's asleep in another room."

I do not inflict my kids on others, and expect them to not inflict their kids and kid-like pets on me.
I posted in another thread - I was at a friend's house. Their dog was getting too close to me : ) I put my feet up on sofa, and shrank into the back as much as possible. They retreated to the garage to get a dog-gate, came back and put it around my sofa chair. :emcrook: Dog was free to move around. My food and drink was brought to my perch.

Thank the pets, but for them, believe me the psychiatric morbidity amongst americans in general and the elderly in particular would have been humungous.
