Bangalore Weather -- how frequently does it rain ?

I am not a Bangalore localite and hence this question. I have heard a lot about the Bangalore Weather --- how pleasant it is and how the summers are so much better than many other metros of India.

But I am also hearing that for 7-8 months, it rains for a few hours every day. And in that sense it resembles the weather in a tropical region like Malaysia or Singapore.

Is this right ? While I do enjoy the rain in India, such frequent rains might be a pain and would also cause cleanliness/hygiene issues.

Thoughts ? Comments ?

That's not true. You will see rain only in monsoon time. In general you will see pleasant weather throughout the year.

As you can see:-

the highest average temperature for the year would be in April, 34'C.

Lowest avg temp would be in Jan, 15'C.

Highest rainfall would be in Aug, Sep and Oct period. Note that it rains in May too (this May, it rained almost 75% of the days). Except some recently built, unplanned localities that occupy ex-lake areas, there's no problem of flooding in most parts of the city. Most water clogging recedes within an hour or two after even the heaviest rains, because the city is at 3000+ feet above sea level.


Sunshine is pretty constant throughout the year with dip during June-Aug period.

Overall, very low humidity, no extremes either into excess of 38'C in summer or single digits in winter.

In most parts of the city, you can still live without a big jacket for winters or A/C for summers. Being the highest elevation major metro in India, well placed from both oceans on either side, there are some natural advantages.

The only thing I would warn is that if there are young children, raised so far in a coastal city like Kolkata, Mumbai, Panaji, Mangaluru, Chennai, Kochi or Visakhapatnam, they would find it hard to adjust to hill-station like climate (albeit quite polluted over the past 20 years). In India anything more than 2000 or 3000 feet level is usually a hill station to beat the summer heat. Here's a city with average elevation of around 3100 feet.

When we grew up a generation back, asthma was a very rare thing. Maybe 1 in 10 kids had it. Today 3 to 4 in 10 have it. Absence of sea level humidity combined with chillness & pollution makes migrants especially vulnerable to asthma. Today Bengaluru can easily be called as the Asthma capital of India.

On the other end elderly people get caught up with arthritis kind of pain that become worse in relatively chilly winters.

So keep those two in mind and then make a move. Good luck!

How did u get the following kind of information for Bangalore from wunderground.com ?
I would like to have similar information for Ahmedabad and Bombay, but I was not able to get around the wunderground site.

I moved here recently - end of June, and I find Bangalore weather to be a little warmer version of Portland, OR so far :P
