My parents-in-law recently bought some US dollar notes (I think about $125 worth) from India for their visit to US. They kept this money in safe and went on a vacation.
They come from vacation after few days and find that the notes are completely destroyed by termites. Same thing happened to Indian Rupees (about 50K worth of it). They were able to get Indian Rupee notes replaced by RBI (after a transaction charge of 750 Rs.).
My question is: Can anything be done to get the dollar notes replaced while in India. I know $125 is not a lot of money, but hate to throw that away like that because of termites. Thanks!!

Please read the FAQ below from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. This is assuming your local bank does not accept it.

I have some currency that was damaged. My bank will not exchange it for undamaged currency. What can I do?
The Bureau of Engraving and Printing's Office of Currency Standards processes all requests for reimbursement for damaged United States currency. They decide the redemption value of torn or otherwise unfit currency by measuring the portions of the notes submitted. Generally, they reimburse the full face value if clearly more than one-half of the original note remains. Currency fragments measuring less than one-half are not redeemable. Go to the Damaged Moneysection of our website for additional information and the procedures to redeem mutilated currency.

you did not mention where the termite infestation happened. India or US. either way, they have a bigger problem - any wooden furniture will be reduced to sawdust, and that will cost far more than $125 to replace. I recommend to forget getting back the $125 and spending money on pest control.
