Anyone r2i'ed from Japan?

Post by Samairati »

Hi there. We reside in Japan currently and might be planning to r2i 2-3 years from now. My husband is employed in a Japanese company, and we are all covered under the social insurance system. Those under this system might be aware that apart from tax being deducted from salary, a good bit is deducted as "towards pension fund." If you were to stay in Japan after you turn 58, the pension amount will be disbursed monthly. If you are a foreigner covered under this system, do not own immovable property in Japan and do not have citizenship, you can claim this amount (a % of it) after you return to your country for good.

I was wondering if there is anyone out here who has claimed their pension fund. I would also like to mention that we are currently in receipt of child allowance for our 2 kids.

TIA!

Hi Samairati,

It is better to make arrangement to claim your pension fund before you leave Japan. Afterward there will be much difficulties.
Staying in Japan for 58 years of retirement is almost impossible because of there late hours work culture and job volatility. Getting alternate job is difficult as it is a small country and you will have limited options.
Also language is another barrier and you will not get proper information regarding government procedure unless you have any good Japanese friend who can speak at least conversational English. And you better know how difficult that to be ... :)

Anumesh, thanks for the tips. My spoken/written Japanese is pretty good so I am not worried about not understanding the procedures.
Have you r2i'ed from Japan?

Aden123, we are all safe thanks!

Hi,
When you are returning from Japan you will get some percentage which depends on the duration of the stay and sum contributed. They have some formula to calculate it. That is miniscule percentage of the contribution.
That is all you will get practically. Rest all becomes charity and they will not give you citing lots of technical /other reasons.
Soon a treaty has to be signed between India and Japan and then probably this can be transferred to India. In practical situation I do not know whether this will work
Best rgds,
