Another experience @ DPS South.
The lady at front desk knew Kannada very well. She was speaking to guard when we went there and continued to talk to him while we were there. She knew I speak kannada too since I was talking to my uncle while I was checking about school. I tried to speak in kannada but she switched to english and didn't bother to give answers to any of my questions asked in kannada. I just switched to english, finished my work and we came back.
Another experience @ some school in Delhi.
The lady at front desk did know hindi. The security guard did know hindi. The communicate in english in school premises.
The children knew hindi , the teacher knows hindi. The medium of instruction is english.
Two girls were caught speaking to each other in hindi during lunch break. They had to write an imposition 'I will not speak in Hindi'.
The 'english medium' tag does not come easy.
I don't think school/work environment is an apt example . The language spoken is not the one preffered personally but the one dictated by work culture.
