Android phones on AT&T?

Post by Sarkar07 »

Both my wife and I are eligible for an upgrade on ATT. After a lot of persuasion by my SIL, we decided to go for a Smartphone. :e My wife got an iPhone 4 and I have to decide which phone to go for. I have been playing with her iPhone for a few days and like it. However, I think I should go for a Droid phone. What's the point of having two iphones in the same house and that too which look exactly the same? Alright, that is not the reason I do not want to buy the iPhone - I just want to try out a Droid phone.

Does anyone have experience with using Droid phone on the ATT network? If so, which phone is good? Some of the phones available on ATT that I think are good are:

HTC Aria (Android 2.1, Seems to be most popular)
Samsung Captivate (Android 2.1, 1 GHz Processor, 5 MP camera with Autofocus, Face Detection and HD video recording)
Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 (Android but NOT 2.1, 1 GHz Processor, 8 MP camera!)

If any of you have any suggestions to pick from the above (or other) phones, please share. Also share any advantages that you found with Droid (over iPhone). Thanks!

The biggest advantage of having two iPhones(4G) is that you could use the Facetime feature where you could see each other and have a video call rather than the regular calls. Its a really cool feature. But on the flip side, you may not want to do that in case you are busy with something else or somebody else! :)

My wife said that too. :) I reminded her that she completely ignores my phone calls when she is at work and lets me leave a message when I call her during day time. And then we meet at home. So there is no need for face-time calls. :p

Even if I agree that Facetime is a cool feature, I don't think it is that big a deal for me...Any suggestions on the Droids? :)

You can share your iTunes library for photos, music, contacts etc.. You can do facetime with other iPhone users too, now if you want to keep somethings private Droid is a good idea :). You don't have to pay twice for iPhone and droid apps/music

The X10 will have Froyo 2.2 upgrade soon. Same deal with Dell Streak, and other HTC phones that show up in the coming soon section of AT&T website. I have a Nexus One with Froyo 2.2, its the best thing ever. Things like wifi hotspot, voice to text, Chrome 2 Phone, skype, maps, & car panel are simply too awesome on Froyo 2.2.

Facetime works only on Wifi (not on 3G). So essentially you can do Facetime only when you are at home. This in-turn will ensure that you are not busy with somebody else!! An in-build security feature!

Go for this man! I phone is baby in front of this monster. My bro has it, and I am no fan of smart phone. But after using this phone for few days, I am going for my first smart phone.

Just go on Amazon and read review.

I read about that too...Is the upgrade to 2.2 free for users using Android 2.1? A colleague mentioned that he gets free upgrades as newer versions of the OS are released. Is that right?

Yes, it should be a OTA update.
Android community already has Froyo2.2 dev builds for all these devices. Pretty easy to update. Just copy the update.zip to sd card and reboot. I gifted my souped up HTC Magic with a hacked 2.1 build to my wife (made her mad). She does not have data connection, but my Froyo phone can turn on Wifi hotspot and give her wifi access while on the move. With all data (contacts, email, etc) stored at google, even if you do not like the developer build, you can reboot with old OS and just login to google. All is well, and restored.

No interest in Windows 7?

We can keep in sync with MS cloud, or Goog cloud. Both are good options.
