I am confused

Post by iamnotsure »

Hi All, I am a potential returnee to India but it is so difficult to do it. I and my wife both work (Fortune 50 company) and no issues here in the US but do want to go back to India. We both get flexibility at work but not sure about it in India. We both make good money ($275k+) but not sure about it in India.

Could some of you share your thoughts who have moved back to India or in the process when both husband and wife used to work in US and the process you are taking to go back to India.

Quick stats: Both husband and wife USC/OCI, 2 kids 4 yrs and 4 months have USC/OCI. Have been in US for last 13 years and wife for 8 years..enough investments in India and house in US and India (NCR).

Reason to go back: Raise kids in India, aging parents, belongingness.
Reasons to not go back: Insance traffic, corruption, pollution and work culture/long hours

How about reading some diaries here to understand some of the thought process of R2Iers.

If the joy that you would derive by being close to parents, raising kids in India exceeds the frustration that you would experience by traffic, corruption, pollution then going back will be a good option. If its the other way round then, it maybe better to stay put. There is not a clear thought process. Many of us have had various reasons to go back. Just depends on what is your reason and how strongly you feel about it.

I read most of your posts and enjoy them. But this description of US life as 'Golden cage' could be just based on your personal experience. I dont think all the people (Indians) who live in US, even those who want to go back for some or the other reason are living in golden cage. I know many people who really love their lives here.

my apologies if you think I said the whole of america. I meant myself and I thought OP going through the same thoughts that I had. I never meant "all Indians in America", those were purely personal thoughts, I should have clarified at the outset.

This could be borderline hijack, so I shall rest and have the real folks answer.

OP,

If one of the reason for r2i is to raise kids there, then it is no brainer. You may not be able to make US kind of money and savings will be less. We were in similar situation like yours, it was very hard to r2i giving up good earning. Regarding problems in India, they are huge. For some there are no solution. But if you have lot of money and a paid off house, then it is not that bad. There is life in India.

For traffic - get a driver or live closer to office. For pollution - if you travel in a/c car it should not be an issue. Corruption - just console yourself that America has lobbying which is corruption with a different name. In India it affects you more but that is the price you pay for the advantages you mentioned. There is no such thing as free lunch.

Work culture - if you have never worked in India before, it may come as a shock to you. But people are more friendly and you can mix with them easily and talk in local language. And yes great fresh food rather than microwave heated leftovers.

Hi, My husband and I both work here and are in non-IT related fields. My main concern about retuning is the lack of opportunities, especially in a tier 2 city.

If both husband and wife are working, it will be the same microwaved leftovers:)

Not if wife and her mother are slaving away in the kitchen to cook for the head of the household who is watching TV in the drawing room. :)
