Our much awaited r2i to Hyderabad

Hi everyone,

First of all thanks to the moderators of this forum for getting such a nice platform for people to discuss their r2i issues. I have been reading here since 3 years but am an active member only now when our r2i plan was finalised. I have got an immense amount of valuable information here and thanks to you all contributing and sharing your experiences.

Reading about all diaries, I used to wait for my turn to write, though my journey to India is still 3 weeks away, but finally booked one way tickets yesterday so couldn't resist starting a diary. I will update things as they go.

We had r2i in our mind always as never could see ourselves growing old here( not that anything wrong with it), but more so around 4 years back when a couple of friends moved and kids were still younger. But that time my spouse was more interested than me, I wasn't convinced, and some other things came in the way, r2i didn't happen. Since then have been debating, and till now my older child will start middle school and decided if not now, probably would be too late. We are few of those members on this forum r2ing with a middle schooler and I read from some of you that its hard to adjust at this age. while I agree its hard for kids to adjust as they're older, but am glad he got a great elementary school experience here and got to participate in various activities and competitions here including the spelling bee, odyssey of the mind to name a few, and that has been a great exposure.

When we told our r2i decision to friends and family here, though they had heard of it before, there were some questions, but when we told them our view on it, no one could disagree. When I talked to friends here, I saw most people had r2i in their mind but due to some reason couldn't gather the courage, or didn't have the opportunity. We have some elderly friends who came to US in the 70s and they could not think of returning as propects back then were not as good in India,and they said after a while when parents and many family in India wasnt there, the attraction was lost as well.Anyway,according to me, whoever desires to r2i should give it a try if possible. I know there have been people who have r2ied and then r2ad back, but in my opinion, they atleast tried. When I was debating about this, the thought that was pivotal was the fact, that at this point, I have the option to r2i, in few years it might not be there, in terms of job, or kids in higher grades or less attachment left in India. So its better to give to it a try, rather than regret few years later. There have been discussions on how much savings one should have, how much salary one should while r2ing. While all those certainly matter, I feel r2i is something to be done by the heart, sometimes if we wait for things to happen in a certain order, time just passes by and what we wished earlier might not hold true then. Some people have also suggested that do not r2i for kids, or parents, but for yourself. In my case, there was absolutely no pressure from parents or inlaws, infact they were bit nervous as to how we will cope in India living here for so long, but we truly want to be close to family, so it isnt for them, it is for us that we want to be with them. I read someone's diary once, that his dad's look at the aiprot when he was looking at his son leave for US, alone is reason enough for him to r2i. I feel the same way too, its your heart's calling, and if one has to do too many calculations, speculations, back and forth, probably r2i might not be for him/her.

We have put our house for sale, but the market as it is, not much luck so far. But we're also trying to rent, and that market seems better. Also looking for apartment, schools in Hyderabad, will finalise after going there. Lot of challenges, hurdles to be overcome, but have a positive feeling about things.

We are in the process of packing our stuff, sorting what to take/sell/dispose and I will update you with things as I get time. Sorry this post got so long, I guess the at the start of the diary, got carried away, would be more precise next time. Thanks for reading and goodluck to everyone thinking about r2i.

good luck and welcome to HYD, you are absolutely right, no point analysing every little thing R2I or not is a decision that has to come from within right from your DNA, all this analysis of whether india is shining or if 25 lakhs per year is a good package or not is different ways of trying not to return.

good luck sansar11. I am in the same boat as you are!!!! It is very tough for us to decide too. We are planning to R2I in 2012 most likely :))) do share your experiences with Hyd school search etc

There will be day to day issues that seem frustrating at times. But if you come with the positive attitude (which you seem to have in abundance), you have a fair chance of keeping yourself happy.

"Attitude is everything !" said one motivational speaker after having the class play that alphabet scoring-adding game. Each alphabet is given a score from 1 to 26, A=1, B=2 etc.. to Z=26. Then a word like Attitude, adds up to a 100. The speaker went on to say "attitude is everything, 100%". One trouble maker already had his worksheet and with a quick trial-and-error, found out that "Whiskey" also adds up to a 100, and pointed that out. The lecturer was dismayed....and checked. Whisky scores only 95, whereas, the way Irish* spell it, with that "e", it gets to a hundred. The motivational speaker was further sidetracked as the class went on to discuss the fine points of single malts.
When R2I'ing, enroute, you can pick up some attitude-adjusters in one of those fine duty-free shops.
