Carrying Desktop to India

Post by raghavanns »

Hi
I am travelling to Chennai through Emirates, I am planning to take desktop and keyboard to my parents. Is there a problem with the Customs? Will they charge Excise duty?

Thanks

I think you can carry one computer (free of duty) after a stay of one year abroad. But I might be wrong here.

However, why would you carry a desktop for your parents from USA? If they are not very good with computers, then I would advice you to buy from local market in India.

The thing is that computers need frequent maintenance (think of viruses etc)... If purchased locally, then they would get a better service from seller.

2 cents...

My understanding is that the rule specifies a laptop as tax free. Desk top may not qualify. So better check.
