Minor with US green card -- how can it maintain status ?

Hello All

Me and my wife are US Green card holders. We permanently relocated to India in January 2010; and currently have a re-entry permit which is valid until Feb 2012. We are expecting our second kid in Feb 2011.

From what I understand if we travel to US with our kid before Feb 2012, the baby will also be given Green Card. But then would the baby also lose the greencard if it stays out of US for more than 6 months ?? [we have relocated to India on a permanent basis; whatever trip we make to US will be a short one].

I am wondering if there are separate rules for a green card holder who is minor -- is there a special status which the baby can avail of ? If not, then I wonder what is the point in getting the green card for my baby ?

Any info regarding this will be appreciated.

Hi We are also in the same situation. Our re-entry permit expires by this nov and my daughter was born inMar2010. I have an elder son(who is a USC) and goes to pre-school here 0in India. We are thinking of using his summer vacation to go back for a 2 month trip. Not sure whether I need to apply for a B2 visa for my daughter. Also Not sure of the chances of renewal of re-entry permit. Any info in this regard will be very helpful to us..

okonomi -- thanks for this info. But my real question is little different. I am aware that my baby will get the green card if we travel to US within 2years of his/her birth. But the problem is our trip to US will only be a short one.This means that once we come back from the short US trip; the baby will lose his/her green card within 6-7 months. What I am trying to find out is whether there are separate rules that exist for minors with US greencard ? Are they allowed to stay outside US for more than 6 months given that the person is a minor ? This is where I am trying to dig more info.

I have no previous experience with that particular situation. However, searching in Murthy or ImmHelp or some other similar sites will be more useful.
I wonder what the parents (yourselves) of the child are planning to do ? Get reentry permits, visit frequently and continue to file US taxes ?

If I don't cncel my 485, is there a chance that I would get my GC when y date becomes curent.
