At the risk of seeming cliche, I am making this post. I am your typical girl who has been to the US studied my masters, worked there for about 5 years, and then life gave me a bad hit on my personal front and I decided to come home to my parents nest - for a break from it all.
Well it has been two years since it has all happened and I am looking to meet new people and making new friends. Work space in India has either kids out college or people who are married and lost in their own little worlds of kids and other family obligations, with little to no time to spare for good quality fun. Now I don't want my post to attract a bunch of wierdos but I am looking for normal genuine people who would make wonderful friends. I am from the Hyderabad.

Alas, I am still in the US. :(
Good luck in finding friends. :) Look in the newspaper for current events. Pick one that is of interest and attend the event. You may get to meet people that match your interest, be it listening to some classical music, some talk on vedanta, a book review club, or an exhibition of art/craft by some local artisan.

Toastmasters is definitely a great place to start. There are clubs all over in India.

In addition to all the all the avenues mentioned by other folks, don't stop looking for friendship at workplace. That is where you spend most of your time and so that is where you will have enough time and interactions to make "safe" and good friends.

Care to explain what is wrong with kids out of college? They are the people having maximum fun. I hate it when they leave me out because they think I am too grown up for their PJs. They mostly leave grownups out because we have other family obligations. If not, hanging out with the youngest would have been my first preference for fun.

#6,
I think, what OP is looking for is that possible permanent relationship depending on the mutual understanding and likings.
Lets leave aside why he/she does not like certain category instead help if we know how the to meet like minded men/women.

Good relationships build when people are having fun. Who knows may be kids have elder brothers who are fun, like minded and successful, and may be able to hook them up. What is important is to build a strong social circle. By eliminating half of the people as kids/young the pickings get smaller.

GB , I didn't think in the angle of kid's elder brother. Although it may sound impractical, I don't deny this.
Hope OP gets this message.
