Early retirement in India?

Post by androscoggin »

The question "how much $$ to go back to India" has been asked previously in previous posts.

I'm asking the same question.....with a little twist. Most questions/answers/calculations were for husband/wife + ~2kids. I'm a 36 year old single guy. Do not intend to ever marry or have kids. That simplifies the calculation a lot. How much money/savings in USD would I need to do the following
(a) completely retire in India and never work a day again
(b) work at some easy low-stress but low paying job in india, maybe part-time, and still survive

I know many will reply with "it depends on your desired standard of living" so let me clarify that. I'm fine moving to a Tier2 or Tier3 city in India, example Surat, Indore, Vizag, Ludhiana etc. No lavish luxuries needed but no maha-kanjoosi either. 1 bedroom flat, maybe 800-1000 sq ft, in decent but not posh/glitzy neighbourhood. Okay eating dal-chawal at home but would like to go to fast-food udipi type restaurants too, 2-3 times a week. No Mercedes/BMW needed but small car or scooter, maybe. Vacationing every 3-4 months in Indian locations by railways, but no fancy Europe trips by flight. Hope you get the idea.

Let me know your estimate or general comments.

Early retirement in India?

Hypothetically, here is the calculation:

1. Rent: Rs 5000 per month
2. Food, Groceries: Rs 5000 per month
3. Clothing: Rs 1000 per month
4. Utilities: Rs 1000 per month
5. Travel for 4 trips per year: Rs 5000 x 4 (Rs 20000 per year) or Rs 1700 per month.
6. Medical expenses: Rs 500 per month
7. Car: Rs 2500 per month.

~ Rs 17000 per month. You can cut corners and probably save another Rs 2000 - Rs 3000 if you are conservative.

One would probably need ~1 - 1.2 crores assuming another 50 years to live.

One thing to note, as you age your medical expenses will go up as well as you need to pay for someone to take care of you, factoring all that it may be more that this estimate or much less as you old if you sign up for an old age home.

I am thinking inflation is not considered above (50 years zero inflation is impossible). Correct me if I am wrong.

I was thinking about how much to I need if I do not work in India.

Keeping in mind the present inflation rate, if we assume 8% to be conservative, then the below figures come in to my mind. I may be wrong, expect comments on it.

If the present monthly expense is Rs. 50,000 and with 8% inflation added each year then more than 6 crores are needed in cash today. And I am not considering the investing part (to make it simple and it can vary from person to person, but inflation will effect all with the same rate). i.e., if someone does not invest it anywhere. So today one needs ~Rs. 6,70,00000 in 2012 then they might need only ~Rs.6,30,00000 in 2017.

Below is an estimate with my assumptions in both $ and Rs for 30 years (2011 to 2040). This was part of my homework was from before I started reading this forum posts and I have not spend time trying to modify this. But I am sure it will be argued and can be changed to something better. But let me know if anything does not make sense or need more explanation. Sorry for the bright colors :-)

Early retirement in India?

I am surprised that there are people like you in this world. Simple Living and just enjoying the life as it comes. Good for you. I do think like you to some extent but i am married and have a kid. So there comes some compromise :(

Goldieg,
Thanks. I have decided I don't want to slave away at a job for 60 hrs a week, 50 weeks a year until I am 60 or 65, just for the sake of mortgage payment or kids college or wife's status perception or whatever. Although probably the majority of other middle class desis will be happy to keep running on this neverending treadmill for the rest of their lives, but it's not for me. I'd like to work maybe another 5 years, save more USD, then convert my USD into a blizzard of INR, buy a small flat somewhere in India and spend the rest of my days travelling places, listening to (or making) music, reading good books, pursuing my hobbies, etc. Maybe I might still take up a job a few years later if I get bored but it will be out of my choice, not out of financial obligations tied to my neck.

r2hyd,
Thanks for the analysis but that seems like a lot of money. It will take me till I'm 80 years old to make that kind of money, if I still have a job by then. Is Rs50,000 per month really needed for a single guy per month in India these days? Have you taken into account interest received on savings? Appreciation of house purchased?

Rs 50K is needed for a family of four in Tier-1 city like Delhi or Bangalore. And for that head of the household has to slog like a donkey! You are a free bird - you can live off on 15K/month since you plan to live in Tier-2 city. That is a measly $350 per month assuming your house and car is paid off. I think even social security payment should be enough for you.

I would say about 25K Rs per month should cover all your "desires".
You should some cash(30-40Laks) in FD or savings for medical expenses when they happen.

One suggestion. Please consider taking up teaching in tier 2 city on voluntary or part time basis. It should be less stressful and might pay for monthly living.

cheers

Teaching is a great idea! Low stress but not necessarily low status. And where else do you get ~2 month vacation per year? Also dont need to worry about economic downturns, layoffs, etc.
