Aadhar id system- how does this work?

I have been reading about Nilekani's ambitious Aadhar eye id system and it sounds very good. However, I am wondering about the practicality of the whole thing. It seems it will enable everyone to open a bank account, get driving licenses etc. I guess it is similar to SSN. But considering that millions in the system will have no registered address, how will this tracking work , especially for banks and what prevents misuse of the system with identity theft.
Can someone explain something about this? thoughts?

This is the one I read and couldnt understand how will it be executed. It shows there will be a good database but how will it be used.

Went to the website of UIDAI. Was amazed to see that a government organization run by Nilekani has officials listing their Gmail/Yahoo/Rediff email ids. For such a sensitive organization, can't GOI provide and enforce some basic security standards...

You mean, like provide them with "@uidai.gov.in" email so that the email traffic can be monitored?

Its not a citizenship authentication system. Its just recording that you are residing in India. And it only takes in Name, DOB, Sex, Address. NRIs, who are Indian citizen, are NOT eligible for Aadhaar number. My guess is that at some point, this will be integrated with Foreigners visiting India too... just like US-Visit database.

The first and most important point about Aadhar is that it is targeted to help the poorer section (aka Indian majority) of society to establish their identity and avail of services such as banking, insurance & direct govt. subsidies.
It provides a std. ID for such people who may not be having a passport or drivers license or bank statement.
In order to get the Aadhar UID, the person needs to provide some form of ID Proof and Address Proof - but the accepted means are diverse and if all fails, then one get a letter from local gazetted govt. officer as proof.
It is supposed to be secured using biometric ID proof (digital retina scan, all 10 fingers digital scan) and it is only accessible by select govt. agencies.
Banks etc who want to verify an indidivual will raise an electronic request with the govt. agency which will respond back with a YES or NO (i.e. id is confirmed or not).

The government must heed the standing committee's advice and review the Bill and, in the meantime, suspend UID related work.

Thats because being a corporate honcho, he forgot to massage the giant egos of P Chidambaram, Commies, BJP leaders, Mukherji etc.

Anyway this Govt headed by MMS has turned out to be a dud in all respects. They should just end their own misery and that of the nation.
