Move back now or wait for Green Card

Post by sxg277 »

I have a good offer in NCR in India and was planning to move in August (as of April 2011). Recent movement in the GC priority date has made me unsure about the timing though. My PD is december 2008 under EB2.

Sould I wait out a couple of months and see what happens with the GC or should i just move. I have a good job in the US as well and never really cared about the GC and just focussed on my career all these years. With the decision to move approaching and the PD moving every month, I am not sure what to do now. If the GC was to take another 2 years I would not think about it and would just move.

What do you guys think?

Thanks!

The Panchatantra (all desis know this, don't we? ) has this (in Arthur Ryder's translation):
If any leave a certain thing,
For things uncertain wandering,
The sure that was, is sure no more;
What is not sure, was lost before."

And besides, as it quite often happens, there is at least one person in the household who controls such decisions. Have you any decision making authority ? or...:))Are you simply under the delusion that you have such a thing ?
The same story of Panchatantra also has the following (many have come to grief following this advice, and some did for not following this advice) :

Only while he does not hear
Woman's whisper in his ear,
Goading him against his will,
Is a man his master still.

And again:
In action, should-not is as should,
In motion, cannot is as can,
In eating, ought-not is as ought,
When woman's whispers drive a man.

At the end, everyone knows that you can only do what is good for your survival.:wink

Even though the dates for EB2 has moved few months in the last couple of bulletins, it is almost certain that it would not reach Dec 2008 this year and there are some chances by Sep 2012. You may want to base your decisions based on that.

What would be the benefit of GC if you plan on moving out anyway apart from the fact that you could return if you wanted for the next 1-2 years? USCIS can be tough if you stay away for long periods especially right after you become a resident. You can get away with a long abscence once in a while depending on the officer processing you but it isn't a good solid plan.

okonomi - I like to believe that I have some say in the decisions... I have only been married for a little over a month now. What do i Know? :)

I grew up in India but never worked in India. The reason for some anxiety and the reason for the dilema about waiting for the green card. T

he what if of not being able to adjust to the work culture there is making me think again. The positives of moving back make me want to move but the unknown of the work culture makes me wonder if it will not end up being all well.

Have accepted the offer and hopefully (if the better half is in 100% agreement) will be back home by middle of September.

Thank yo0u for sharing your thoughts.

"if" ? That is a biggie !! Just be careful...there !! This is a bigger issue than that "work culture". You move when and how she wants you to move -- this works for your own twosome, for R2I and for your whole life.

If you are not certain of settling in India permanently and there is a chance that you may look to R2A, then certainly your first priority should be GC as opposed to good/not-so-good offer in India.

But if you have made up your mind to R2I permanently and think that you are not going to be fazed by the difficulties/negatives here, then why wait for another stamp which, in any case, has a expiry if unused.

Dec 2008 is still some way off. You still don't have any idea as to how many people are yet to file 485s with PDs between July 2007 and Dec 2008. It could still take more than 2 years for your PD to be current. But that aside, if you are still attracted to GC and US life it's worth staying put because once you move to india now there's no going back. It's better to be safe than sorry, so be sure that you want to move to india and you'll obsolutely be happy there.

All depends on how "good" the "Good Offer" is. PD of Dec 2008 is way too far away. There are already some discussions on the popular immigration forums that after the Sep'11 bulletin, the dates may retrogress. So take your decision on the long term interests of you and your family.

It seems like you are in your late twenties. If true, then this is what I would have done in my late twenties: If the offer is in some kind of a managerial position with good career advancement and good pay (read total household income in terms of CTC = 30L+) then I personally would have taken it in a blink. If household income would be 30L-20L then I would do a detailed cost-benefit and savings analysis (US vs India Savings comparison), and take a decision based on that. If below 20L, then I will not move to India at this time.

I am in the same boat and making arrangements to move in mid September to Gurgaon. Till a few days ago I thought anxiety was a myth. I feel it now and how.

I am not sure I agree with the post by sid_earth though. I know there are smarter people out there who make a lot of money, but 30+ in your late twenties seems to be on the higher end to me.
