UID available for US Citizen/OCI residing in India?

Post by goober71 »

Hi,
We recently moved back to India with USC/OCI. Residing in my parents home, so don't have electricity bill, phone bill, etc in my name.
Can we/should we apply for the new UID program? Anyone have experience with this? If anyone has applied for UID having USC/OCI, what docs were needed?
Please let me know.

Thanks.

UID is available for all residents of India - regardless of whether they are citizens of India or not.

UID is yet to be adopted widely - it is still at a nascent stage and issual of UIDs has barely started. The process may take years to complete. In the meanwhile, you can open bank accounts, get phone connection, utilities, etc without the UID number (in fact the forms are not updated yet to ask for the UID number).

Check out the official website of UID to learn more about how/where to apply: http://uidai.gov.in/

UID is ment for Indian Citizens only. But the catch is eventually UId may be required for everything like opening Bank Acct to paying your property taxes. Not there yet...but it will get there ...just like Social Security Number. So every R2I need to be aware of it. So far no foreigner can get it. But no clarity about a PIO or OCI residing in India.
Can anyone with more information shed light on this?
