Reston today is unfortunately NOT what it used to be before. As such the schools in reston are not considered good and asians/desis mostly prefer to go to Ashburn or if rich enough go to McLean. There are some good schools in Chantilly (20171 Zip)

Sterling is good; it's part of Loudon county which, along with Fairfax county is one of the best school districts in Northern VA. Centreville is too far from Reston (I lived in Centreville few years ago); coupled with the bumper-to-bumper traffic during the rush hour, it'll make the commute inordinately long. You could look at Herndon as well, which is very near to Reston. The commute will be quick and short. There's a large number of Indian presence as well. However, the homes in Herndon look old and dull;

The newer communities like Ashburn, Broadlands and Brambleton are spacious and spanking new. The commute will take you long during the rush hour; but, if you can work your schedule in such a way that you avoid the rush hour, then the commute is 20-30 minutes. These suburbs are all part of Loudon county which, as I mentioned earlier, is one of the best school districts in Northern VA.

Found this website that ranks schools across US. May need to look at their definition of Gold/Silver/Bronze etc. Has a listing of top 75 high schools in the state.

Areas near Chantilly and Fairlakes have very good schools in Fairfax county. This is about 5 miles from Reston, in fact many people from Reston are moving to mentioned areas due to school rezoning issues in Reston.
Chantilly High school is the best high school, and all the elementary and middle schools under that are top rated(Greenbrier west etc ). South asian (especially Indian) population is also very good in these schools in case if you are looking for competitive environment.

You can consider living in Herndon,Va . It's very near to Reston,Va. You did not mention your kids age. The school district in herndon Rachel carson middle school is one of the best schools in Fairfax county. If your kids are going to elementary school , buzz aldrin elementary school is a very good school. Racehl carson middle school and the elementary school Floris is top rated school and the westfield high school is also good.

If you are planning to purchase a home then Herndon would be the most expensive areas so lot of indians are either moving to Ashburn,Va or Southriding,Va.

But if you are planning to rent it out, Then herndon would be the best place. It's easy to commute everywhere. Shops,Hospitals,Public library are all within 10 min drive. And there are two community centers within short drive. There lots of activities for the kids .

thanks for all the inputs. herndon looks like a good option. online reviews point to a lot of low income groups living there. so school district getting affected. how true is that?
