Anna Hazare ! What is happening in India?

Corruption is a huge problem in India as everyone knows and this is day-by day increasing with possible collapse of entire system or even democracy..

What can be done to bring the officers accountable?

My thinking is, IAS officers are key people who ignore or take part in this corruption since every file has to move through them.. Also, the political bosses...

Sometime i feel like getting trained in high tech surveillance in US (the most advanced) and expose these folks to Media or file case in Court through a grass roots organization..

Any ideas what/how can be dealt with this menace. Is their any hope for India in this?

Forget about Surveillance. It is a public knowledge in so many of the govt bodies, that corruption prevails. There is got to be a strict regulation to begin with. Recall the POTA (or whatever it was) act to handle the terrorists? Something like that. As soon as we can frame with some limited evidence that the person has taken a bribe, the law as to allow the officers to arrest the person and suspend immediately without inquiry for a period of 15 days. Only then inquiry etc has to start.

First step would be to reform justice system. If you have efficient and non-corrupt justice system (like in US) then rest of the things will fall in place.

Second would be for common people to look down upon people who indulge in corruption. Right now society encourages and embraces corrupt people. Once girls quit marrying corrupt people, neighbors quit talking to corrupt neighbors, people stop associating with corrupt people etc it will start taking its toll.

I agree it is terrible. Nothing works without greasing palms. But I believe there is some hope if we can go back and do our little bit. Almost all organsiations soon acquire a political hue and start becoming corrupt for their own reasons.

Revamping the judicial system or introducing something like Pota act is not practical or at least not in our control unless one of us become a CM/PM.. :)

Any thoughts on we as citizens can do something about this and develop a mechanism so that others who are interested can emulate it in their own areas?

In my experience of last 8 months after my R2I, only one thing can be done against corruption in India:

I agree.....nothing can be done....Too many layers are in effect. I say this because I have witnessed it first hand. The first time when i came across it, I was shaken to the core. Corporates/politicians/Governmental bodies all smeared in the greed. I always had heard of it but never had to go thru it in person. I fought with myself....my ethics with my practical sense. Too much of my money was at stake, not to forget the sweat and blood. We waited and waited for the matter to resolve, but nothing happened. We saw us losing money every minute and we gave up. I let my ethics down the drain but I was writing checks to my employees and I couldn't do anything else. Had to bow down to the system.

I felt sorry but I guess I did what was right for myself, my sanity, my business and my employees. We were very naive, trusted a reputed business organisation who took us for a ride. It is too complex to fight it. I have given up. I have yet to meet a single governmental/State run organisation who don't demand money to get any work done and if you refuse they will make your life a living hell and a corporate body who float norms and regulations left and right making a leeway to these governemntal bodies to demand bribe. Small fishes in the pond are the ones (like us) who get affected in this web of corruption.

Fight the good fight if you dare.

My view is that people bribe here either because they want to do something illegal or they want to get something done fast.
Think about it. Can you legitimately say that you are adhering to the law and that you are willing to spend the time and yet you had to bribe someone? This doesn't occur in day-to-day dealings (atleast not in my experience).

Yes - you may face this in some one-shot dealings like real estate where the system is not transparent but even there I have seen that most people pay a bribe so that they can register their land at sub-par values (to minimize tax paid) or they are buying land that is not fully legal yet. Certainly there are situations where we end up paying a bribe but I don't think its fair to say that it is needed for ALL government transactions.

RnR....doesnt work. Meet me sometime in person I will let you know my experiences with corruption. I am scared for my life to spell things out on internet.

Corruption

What is democracy?

Is it my India?

The above 3 are not the first thoughts that come to one's mind on hearing about corruption but are the three google adsense ads that have popped up on this page!
If only ordinary citizens could find the intricate and delicate relationship and balance that these three have we would not still be counted amongst the third world countries, with 70% or so of the population earning less than 20 Rs a day!:)
