Non IT R2I

Post by Indiadreaming »

Just wanted to find out any success stories of any non IT folks. I am on H1B with GC on process. Married with one kid. I have been in Europe for a few years and then US for 8. I have some savings(less than 150k including 401k and all other modes) and two flats in India that are paid off.

I am just getting real tired of IT and honestly don't want to continue working in it. Wife makes some money babysitting. We have a decent nest egg, but with India's cost of living, just a bit scared. I am just tired, but at 42, bit scared to change careers.

At this point, Greencard seems a distant dream and then 5 years for citizenship. I am thinking I want to be a lecturer-but I think govt job age limit is 35? How is the field-I only have IT experience, but have a Master's degree. I am also thinking maybe go to the Gulf for lecturer job-but have no teaching experience.

I wanted to start a business-but the prices of everything from land and labor scares me.

Just looking at some ideas. My uncle has a hotel and was thinking of buying a small guest house in a tourist location. The real estate prices seem to be the same as USA-which is scary.

Just in the information gathering state and wondering if anyone has done a successful non IT R2I after working in IT, the bulk of your life??

I completely understand your situation. I am going through the same now. I guess something outside of IT might take some time to analyze and study the new business model if a person is missing the risk taking attitude. I have seen my friends who are in the same boat just talking but not able to make the final move to make the switch. The major obstacle being the reduced income or lack of initial profit (in case of business). Hope to hear some success stories from our group here.

True, monthly salary folks are getting only the monthly salary and life goes in the same cycle. I have witnessed few of my friends doing business during my recent India vacation and I was amazed how much money they make. Of course, they are hard working but spending power is too much these days so everything sells. Only those guys who started start-up companies are struggling as they need a huge working capital and besides you need to really invest on your infrastructure to have even client think about you.

I saw the same too. I saw one person (not an IT, he is just a cable operator.. may be running business..) saw he was building a house for 1.5 crore ($400K). I can't afford it even after working so many years here in US. So is motivation to move to India. We can make/save more money in India than here.

I am in the same boat. I am in semi IT ...managing a IT team and hands off person. I am SUPER bored in my current role and would like to go back to india and do anything BUT IT related. I am also inclining towards Non Profits in india. Yes it is less money but just want to get out this vicious paycheck to paychek circle and do not look forward going to office every morning. I would like to return to a tier 2 city and would like to set up a small business that gives me enough to take care of the family needs. My idea is to set up something that involve early education for kids, which is rewarding. I am planning to go back in 2012 and no US Citizenship/GC.

My hubby and we moved back from US last yr. We never got into the vicious cycle of applying for GC etc so we had no dilemmas to return.Hubby has left IT and is pursuing his own venture(non IT). I am still into IT and but planning to quit and venture on my own in an yrs time. We are very happy with what we have achieved in life. Do not have too many needs on Money front. We have a paid off decent size apartment here and hubby has invested the rest into his business. My salary is keeping the house running. Recently I have taken a salary hit and moved to a lower paying but much calmer 9-5 job but its a tradeoff that I have done and I am totally satisfied.

This is wonderful. One should be content. As our needs grows worry follows. I have seen unhappy millionaires. We should draw a line some where and start living happily. There is nothing wrong in making more money but not at the cost of losing happiness and health.

Once again, this post goes to show that when "She" is happy, everyone is happy !! R2I success depends on how happy the LOH* is in the post-R2I situation. (*LOH = lady of the home )
Be that as it may, why would you call "applying for a GC "a vicious cycle" ? I cannot imagine anything cyclical about it, and vicious ?! If you have the time, please explain this.
