Why do laptops sold in India suck?

Post by Mastan Bhai »

All the specs seem to be 3 years old & anything decent costs as much as an import with customs duty. 2MB L2 cache and 2GB RAM? Seriously?

In any case, I need a new laptop. I'm moving out of Bombay to live in Gangtok for a minimum of 4 months. So I want something that isn't too pricey and won't matter much if it gets stolen by hotel room service or freezes in the cold outside (I'll get myself an m18x later). Good battery life a plus.

I want minimum 8GB RAM (16 is even better), SSD storage, and an i7 with 6 or 8MB L2.

Macbooks seem to be the only reasonably priced laptops considering these requirements but I am horrified by the possibility of being mistaken for an Apple fanboy (or artsy/creative/homosexual) if I use them (which I am not).

Is there anything else under Rs.80k with these specs?

Here you go... No SSD drives in laptop yet. I haven't seen them in US, let alone India.

http://www.flipkart.com/browse/computers/price-range/rs.45000+-+rs.60000?filter=system_memory%3A8+GB+DDR3&_l=bAxE2l2D1ZJ1gOJ4C0C5eA--&_r=ai_cI2TkVnYGf+NO7MNTLQ--&ref=6c3da325-60e3-40c8-a1f6-c5a8f445a9c2

Flipkart is my equivalent of Amazon... they are good.

Don't jump to conclusions that India suck when it comes to laptop. It doesn't. You will end up what you claim about India, if you just don't know where to look.

I haven't checked other manufacturers.. But HP laptops can be customized to have SSD. Most others do probably.

Macbook and 'reasonably priced' in the same sentence?
The only way I'll use them in the same sentence is : Macbooks are never reasonably priced compared to Windows/Linux PCs, if hardware specification is taken as a major consideration.

Mastan, you seem to have the knack of creating controversial posts, all of which seem to criticize something about India.
If you are really 21 and everything you have noted earlier is actually correct, then I can understand how you feel.
I left India when I was 21 as well and initially, for the first 5 to 10 years, I also felt privileged to have left. It is only as you mature that you start to realize the value of things that are beyond glitter and are less superficial.

It is understood that most appliances sold in a developing country will be a little less powerful than those sold in a country like the United States where people have a culture of wastefulness and believe that bigger is better. This can be seen in the horsepower of cars, the size of homes and so on. Nevertheless, 4 to 6 Gb is usually the amount of RAM folder normal laptop sold here. Anybody wanting 16 Gb is usually in the custom designed area. Why on earth would you need 16 Gb of RAM in a laptop that you say is expendable and has to be cheap? How do you manage a couple years ago when even 1 Gb was top-of-the-line?

here is the selection available from Best Buy:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Laptop-Computers/PC+Laptops/pcmcat247400050000.c?id=pcmcat247400050000

Best Buy is the biggest retailer in the United States and as you can see most laptops listed here have 2 to 4 Gb of RAM.

Perhaps, for low IQ children and others who are enamored by shiny graphics. I feel much more productive with good old Ubuntu or BSD (dragonfly or PC BSD).

Even a solipsist needs to protect his reputation from the imaginary people in his mind!

1GB wasn't top of the line in any point of time beyond 2003. You can never have too much RAM, or horsepower for that matter. I run several instances of virtualized OS (virtualbox) simultaneously, and other applications that are resource intensive. Nothing superficial about this (macbooks on the other hand...). What valuable things are you referring to anyway? The filth, pollution and general malevolence of people?
