:( RIP Mr. Singh. You were one of the biggest reasons I became a music lover. You were there during the times of stress and you were there during the times of joy. Fortunately, your voice is still with us and would soothe our minds for a long long time. I would not say thanks for providing us immense pleasure because that would seem insufficient. Let us remain in your debt.

It is very difficult to choose a favourite from the songs as each one of them is a gem. But if I want to choose some of the best (apart from the one posted above), here they are:

Garaj baras pyasi dharati par: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NS7ujdR7oaA
Pyar ka pahala khat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIAwgrbErTo

Jagjitji will be dearly missed but he will continue to live on through his poignant lyrics and mellow, soulful voice. His voice had the power to grab your attention amidst a hundred distractions and yet retain your attention.

Whether it is one of the immaculate songs referenced by foxbatneo above or "Jhuki jhuki si nazar", "Tum itna jo muskura rahe ho" in 1982 or "Hosh walon ko" 17 years later in 1999, and the numerous melodies after that; the deep, haunting voice will always be fresh in our memories.

May his soul rest in peace.

I was listening to it this morning on my iphone and was wondering how in one week, we have lost both the maker of the phone and the maker of the song!
JS's songs had an amazing calming effect! "Honton se choo lo" was/is my favorite too!

Hey Jagjit this is just not fair, you just cant go like this...

When my love refused to marry me--- You were there
When I left India and was lonely and struggling in US--- You were there
You were always with me whenever I was in listless mood

And now you want to say Good bye? Hey come back I have not even digest all of your Gazals yet!:emunlove:

One of My favorite in Raag Bhairavi....When you listen to the Alap you will know what JS was..

Meri tanhaiyon me...

[QUOTE]
Meri tanhaiyon tum hi laga lo mujhko seene se
Ke main ghabraa gaya hoon is tarah ro ro ke jeene se

Ye aadhi raat ko fir choodiyaan si kya khanakti hai

Koi aata hai ya meri hi zanzeeren chanakthi hai
Ye baaten kis tarah poochoon main saawan ke mahine se
Ke main ghabraa gaya hoon is tarah ro ro ke jeene se

Peene do mujhe apne hi lahoo ka jaam peene do
Na seene do kisi ko bhi mera daaman na seene do
Meri wahshat na badh jaaye kahin daaman ke seene se
Ke main ghabraa gaya hoon is tarah ro ro ke jeene se

Jagjit popularized the ghazals in the era of Hindi pop and evergreen bollywood music. Growing up, I had listened to Ghulam Ali, Mehdi Hasan and Abida Parveen as my dad used to be a big fan of these singers, but I always found their shayari too complicated and hard to understand. Then there were other ghazal singers I think who were too 'simplistic'. I think Jagit Singh's ghazals had the perfect blend of shayari and melody.

I became a big Jagjit fan during my undergraduate days when his ghazals accompanied by Old Monk rum or cheap vodka and our lofty plans of GRE/GMATs/F1s/I-20s/Y2k along with countless love stories of classmates provided hours of entertainment.

Being from a small town India, Jagjit's concert was my first ever live concert I attended with my parents. A few years back I had the previledge of attending one of this concerts here in US with my wife. And I along with all the audience wished if Chitra Singh was there on the stage with him.

His departure has left a huge void in the Ghazal world. He brought Ghazals to millions of non-urdu speaking listeners. RIP Jagjit Sahib....we will miss you!!!
