While quickly reading an old thread discussing displaying genders of members mentioned by Rajram , my eyes caught this thing.
[QUOTE]There are only a few (6-7) active female posters in this forum. Fast forward ~3 years, I am seeing that probably same count remains as far as women participation goes. Members were mentioning in some context that women's participation has increased but looks like it is all just a theory as proof seems different.
Women's corner sees posts only once in a while. The blogland which is dominated by woman writers sees very few comments (mostly by repeat visitors of the blog)
I compare that with some competitor sites, FB discussion groups and see tons of women participating in 100s or even close to thousand.
What could be the reason for Desi women to keep this 'site' out of their 'sight'?
Is that because forum has 'R2I' in its URL and that is a big deterrent for many NRI women?
Is anonymity compared to FB another reason as most women are exhibitionists :) ?
Is it because the top panel is Moderator board which first shows up than any fun topics? Many forums hide it from guests or is shown at the bottom to the members..
Inquiring mind wants to know.
Why women member\'s participation is so less in this forum ?

As you had said, there are many forums for desis on the internet. Some (like member P_Jani are prolific in more than one forum) are also on other forums or sites. That would naturally cut down on participation here. That could be one reason. I presume you are also on other forums.

No, I am not. This is the only discussion board where I am active member. I used to be in FB but cut it off as posting one liners repetitively on friend's latest trip pics seemed boring after a while :) and if by chance, I was honest in any comment, then possibility of third world war with silence or cutting off relation as a major weapon was very much there !! Another reason was classmates from elementary school sending re-union requests and messages !! Plus employer strongly discourages using FB and google +. But while communicating with them, I was redirected to many forums where they frequent and hence the impression you might have formed. I did ask them but didn't get satisfactory answer.
My reason for coming here was to get enough logistics and planning for R2I but it seems too early to start posting on that. But while getting familiar with forum, in US west coast time when I post/read, I see good number of people are in topics other than R2I but most of them are men(or pose as men if Mastan Bhai's theory is correct). That's why this thread to satiate my curiosity.

On the topic member RI once said, "Because women have better things to do." :)
Over time he evolved to crisper responses along the lines of: "Why do you care?" :)
Truly miss his posts!

I think many women just choose to be silent readers and not post on these forums unless they have a question. Men OTOH love to argue when they have a strong opinion especially so on an anonmyous forum. May be women have their men to argue with. Another reason could be that women feel comfortable expressing their thoughts with friends in the inner circle and not on an online forum or they are just too concerned about their articulation skills.

Come on.. This is the only place where men can win at least some arguments.

Sorry, I dont think so.. There are other forums like IL that has so much of women voicing their opinions..
From my POV, women learn to set priorities in life. We manage time by prioritizing. If I need to spend 12 hrs of a day watching my back and defending every word uttered, play the role of a Lawyer, archaelogist, or English professor, women prefer to spend that more productively. I would rather spend time with my kid, planning his next activity than plan my next defense on this forum. We already play multiple roles in our life, unlike men - but we do not need all the drama over some fictitious role-playing game.
As most of us have been nostalgically reminiscing, it used to be lotsa fun and jokes.. not anymore.
Before someone comes up with - Oh, men are all so multi-taskers, etc.. Come on, who prefers football games over chores, playing videogames over nappy-changing duty... :P
