Vizag R2I - Non local

Post by geotech »

Hi folks, my wife and I are planning to R2I to Vizag (Vishakapatnam) in 2012. Been here in US for 7 years and got a job offer where I will get a min. of 12 lakh pa in hand. I am originally from Delhi and have never been to Vizag. Heard it?s a beautiful place and have a couple of friends there. Just wondering if you good local folks can answer few of my questions-

a) Is 1 lakh per month good enough for Vizag? We are not high maintenance, would like to eat out one or two times a week, get a cook/domestic help.
b) I love south Indian cuisine, but will it be hard to get north Indian cuisine/fast food in Vizag?
c) Are there malls/multiplexes in Vizag? Do they put up Hindi/English movies?
d) Is it a pretty conservative city or there is some young crowd?
e) Do locals have an issue with non-locals and especially northies settling there? Any other communal issues?
f) How about infrastructure/roads/traffic?
g) Wife is in HR, so wondering if there are other MNCs in Vizag and if getting a job for her would be an issue. She has US experience as well.
h) Any other comments, suggestions, tips are welcome!

Hope to be in the city sometime next year!

Vizag R2I - Non local

Post by Raja123 »

I am not local but lived in Vizag for few years.

1 lakh is goog enough to live in Vizag. Cost of living is low compared to metros. There is no problem with non locals. Vizag has large public sector industries where work force is from all over india. But if you are in IT, I am assuming most people would be locals. There are very few IT MNC's in Vizag.

Vizag gets hot and humid during the summer time, that is the only drawback I can see. Start learning Telugu, you will need it.

Thanks for the reply. Just to clarify, I am non IT (civil-geotechnical). We don't have any kids btw. I found out from online research that there are fast food options in Vizag and a couple good malls with multiplexes.

Having lived in Vizag 20+ yrs before, i can say that the amount per month is pretty good as fast as Vizag living standards are concerned.. The city has lot of Gujarathi/Hindi speaking community because of Industries and Naval base..

We do have few malls and one multiplex and traffic is not bad at all to reach anywhere in the city. Overall, i don't think u will feel out of place in Vizag.. Lot of options for food & shopping..

Coming from a civil background but working in IT now, i'm pretty curious what company can offer that kind of salary in Vizag in Geotechnical... Ru going to work with National Highways?
