Buying Indian gold jewelry in the US

Post by smariner »

Has anyone bought 18k-22k gold jewelry in the US? There are quite a few Indian Jewelry stores in the US -- but I have never looked into them.
How are the prices here? Are they too expensive compared to buying comparable jewelry in India? Any reputed stores that you can recommend?

You've not specified any particular city... I highly recommend Bhindi jewelers. Good service and designs to appeal to variety of tastes and budgets.

I am not sure how the prices compare to buying comparable jewelry in India, most likely it must be higher priced in U.S., due to local U.S. craftsmanship costing more, and if the jewelry is made in India or elsewhere, then import and transportation might increase the price.

If visits to India are short, kids are too young, then a slightly higher price for buying jewelry in the U.S. is worth paying. One can look at the designs peacefully, and also precious India vacation time is not wasted sitting in a jewelry shop in India.

Thanks for the tip about Bhindi's jewelers.
We are located in Seattle. Ideally, I'd have prefered a store in the Seattle area -- but we don't have (m)an reputed jewelry stores AFAIK. So, I'm looking for a store that can ship the jewelry.

Seems like most of the Indian jewelers here charge based on the weight of the ornament. Typical charges for gold-only jewelry seem to be in the range of ($12-$20) per gram of gold + market rate of gold. Does that seem reasonable?

That looks like a 30% markup. Price equivalence of 18 carat gold compared to 22/24 carat.

The markup seems to be for the labor & wastage. I believe jewelry stores in India also charge this markup (but could be abt 10% or so)?

There seem to be quite a few online jewelers in the US -- any experiences with any of these stores?
