How to become an effective Delivery Manager in IT services?

Post by brknny »

The service deliverable manager has general oversight over workers included in the conveyance process, despite the fact that he may not be their immediate director. Supervisors who get objections or criticism on a specific work group or worker will impart those remarks to chiefs and staff included. Eventually, the administration conveyance supervisor considers all administration offices and workers responsible for completing the required procedures and undertakings.

Two words. Profit Margin. You will have to figure out how to improve these margins. Management (Sharks in Suits) don't care who/what/where/when..... All they ask you is how you will improve margins. Roughly translates to "Get rid of exp guys and get in freshers"

DM is a tough role. You are between a rock and hard place sometimes. General common sense advice:

  • Understand the team, their strengths and weaknesses. Techies usually don't like/know better communication and documentation needed by senior management and clients. They might think it's a waste of time. You need to act as a bridge here and lead by example. Some informal trainings/mentoring/one on ones focusing on these.
  • A good DM also needs to stay on top of technical lingo, recent tech developments etc to be able to get the respect of the team members. Team members can teach us some of this pretty easy if we are willing to listen.
  • Genuinely respect the team and customer. Informal outings with team members. Pay from pocket if company doesn't sponsor enough, the returns are worth it. I found if we form a good bond with team, Indian team members will do wonders and go way out to deliver/help.

This is very true. But one has to balance the team with various levels of experience. Freshers are not all bad, if you choose the right ones, pair them with right mentors/senior folks, they work with commitment with a fire in their belly.

Agree with Pdev and ILuvHyd. Profit Margin/net margin/gross margin will be like a daily soup.
