Any experiences regarding minor's US passport renewal in India

Post by gurusw »

We are going to renew our kid's US passport in Mumbai. Has anyone done the same?

How long does the appointment last? How long does it take to get the new passport back? Do they send both old & new passport by courier?

Any other tips?... should we take any additional docs than what's mentioned on their website: http://mumbai.usconsulate.gov/new-child-under-16-passport.html

TIA.

Why Mumbai?

Check the Chennai consulate website. The passport officers visit Bangalore regularly. If you take appointment the PP can be renewed from Bangalore. Send email to the Chennai consulate with your request:

"Please email your request to [email protected] along with your contact number. We will respond to your request within 5 business days. Appointments should be made in the name of the person(s) receiving the service and should specify all services being requested."

This post might be of help to you. I thought you were based in Bangalore. Wouldn't Chennai be a better option for you?. Yes, the situation is little bit out of control here at the Chennai US Consulate but hoping that it comes back to normal by tomorrow or day after.

pazham;274972I had been to the US consulate this morning to renew my son's passport. Thanks to the forum member who had pointed me the the information in the website. Everything was clearly documented. I had to get the following things for my son (Minor under 16).

1. Curent Passport
2. Original Birth certificate of my son
3. 2 passport photos 2" X 2" from last 6 months
4. Our Passports
5. Fees Rs 4080 (or $85)
6. Progressive photos of my son

We had scheduled an appointment at 10:15 am. We went inside at 10:10 and we were out at 10:30. We waited for our turn and we were called in to submit the application. No standing in queues. No cutting lines. No nepotism. It took us only 10 minutes to get all documents verified and submit our application.Typical American process. No Ifs and Buts. No bribing etc. Everything was well documented and executed to perfection. After being in India for close to 2 years, this was like Godsend for me. Only if we this kind of process at the Govt Office here, life would have been much better. So much bureaucracy everywhere.

Sorry had to rant this one out.

Yes, we are in Bangalore & fall under Chennai jurisdiction. But my parents are in Mumbai, and we are visiting them anyways. So I thought of visiting the consulate there, and get the PP renewed with their address. Consulate is not asking us for address proof anyways :)

I thought I am saving trip to Chennai. But I did not know about Bangalore outreach. Maybe I will consider it. Still some questions remain:
For children under age 16, the parents must prove their parentage by showing a copy of the child's government-issued birth certificate. If the birth certificate lists the mother's maiden name, she should be able to prove her identity accordingly.
• Son's birth cert has my wife's name after marriage. Form DS-11 asks for parent's name: There are two boxes: "First & middle name" , "Last name (at parents birth)". Now why would they want my wife's last name at her birth, if that is not on son's birth cert. Furthermore her middle name is changed since marriage. So I am not sure what to fill in here.
  • I guess the original PP will be returned, right? or do I need to specifically request them for it? The old PP needs to be returned since it got U visa (OCI sticker).
  • The return address form needs passport number. I guess I will have to fill in expiring PP number, correct?
Thanks.

I renewed my Kids passport 6 months back . I live in Bangalore but renewed the passport at Hyderabad consulate .

You can renew the passport at any consulate and can give your present mailing address, they don?t ask you any address proof etc. So in my case I gave my Bangalore address as my mailing address.

The Bangalore outreach program is good but it happens once in a while and the appointment fills up quickly.

The consulate will return the new passport with the OLD passport ( with punched holes) by mail .

I took a pre paid VFS courier envelope which you get it from the VFS counter, if you don?t have this pre-paid courier envelope, then they will send your passport through India postal service registered post free of cost.

The Bangalore outreach program is on hold currently, don't know for how long.

We had been to Chennai for passport renewal and the lady at the Consulate said it was due to Budget constraints and logistical issues. Maybe the recent Visa scandal might have played a vital role in this decision.

So it is bad news again for folks (USC) who live in Bangalore.

Today applied for renewal of passport at Bangalore Outreach. They started after long gap. As soon as I came to know about outreach, sent them email requesting appt. Got confirmed slot after about 7 days. My friend, who mailed 10 mins after me, could not get appt ( such is demand for consular services in Bangalore). They emailed me documents to bring, DDs, photograph details and the order in which those documents to be arranged.

Actual work done in 5 mins. I signed application next to mother's signature( instead of line below.. oops). But officer was so cool, "don't worry, its ok. Sign in the line below". and she struck out the line above.. (had I done that in any of Indian documents :-( )

Returned all documents and punched holes in old/current passport.

This time, officer did not ask for age progression pictures. Previous renewals they looked at photographs.
Going to that place and coming back took 2.5 hrs ( for 12 kms ride each way).

I hope they continue to come to Bangalore every month/quarter.

    Hi Samatha,

Thread FFH has posted above has all the information. Also, as soon as you get appointment (in Blore) , they will email you all that's needed. Very clear instructions. Only hurdle in the process is getting appointment at Bangalore. You should send request as soon as you get to know that there is outreach program.
