Once again, India is proactive whereas we are sunk in a malaise in America.
We are suffering the biggest drought since the dust bowl days...and our government is doing NOTHING....
Anyone in the corn-futures ? You know what I am talking about.
They ought to meet with the elders in all the tribes in the Reservations. Bring out the best rain dancers and have a pow-wow in Kansas. Did anyone care that Dodge City has suffered 7 consecutive days of over 100 F in June... in JUNE ! Where is Matt Dillon ? He could ride out and get some Pawnee come to town and take care of bizness.

Rain God gives India more water than its population can possibly use. If only the great Government of India had little bit of vision and honesty to implement the water conservation and storage schemes than spending crores on these stupid prayers. Now where are those who think government knows all and there are no water shortages in India? Call me sinister but I hope next year's water shortage is so bad that even those ba$tards in government experience what it means to wait hours or walk miles for few liters of water.

In that Hindu article, there is
[QUOTE]
It looks like an economic stimulus plan with a win-win strategy for the 2014 elections.
If there is rain, (or not) the castes that believe in the temple/puja things would look kindly upon the ruling parties.
If there is rain, but not sufficiently enough of it, then the ruling junta can blame the opposition for angering the gods to reduce the amount of rain.
If there is no rain, the ruling junta can still claim they had done all they can, and if only the opposition had their traps shut and not put the kibosh on the scheme by bad-mouthing it before it could work.
I know one thing. If there is rain, and plenty of it, then the priests who performed that varuna yagna will get H1B visas to come out here and do the same magic for us (I mean, US) in the next season. We like software people, the softer, the better.

The Department of Revenue (Muzrai) has issued a circular to 34,000 temples under its control to conduct ‘abhishekha,’ ‘varuna mantra,’ ‘jalabhishekha’ and several other rituals......
The government has sanctioned a maximum of Rs. 5,000 for each temple. This will amount to not less than Rs.17 crore. Temples in the A, B and C categories are expected to conduct the rituals on July 27 and August 2. The circular makes a particular mention of such prominent temples as Kollur Mookambika, Kukke Subrahmanya Swamy, Kateelu Durgaparmeshwari and Nanjangud Srikantheswara Swamy.

Government money?
Dude.. Karnataka government has a Mujrai department (Endowments) which controls over 34,000 temples of the state. It collects all the voluntary donations by the millions of Hindu devotees and then "administers" the temples using that money (whatever is left after "secular" causes like Haj subsidy or politicians' pet projects). Surprisingly, the same government in a secular country wouldn't dare touch a church or mosque's donations or money.
Easily the collection is in 100s of crores a year, paid by practicing Hindus who have absolutely no issues with Vedic time practices like prayer for rain.
So a few crores being allowed to be used by the temples for what they are capable of, conducting Yajnas or Poojas, a crime?
What else you expect a temple to do? Cloud seeding or conduct a world meteorologist conference?
First you ask the government to keep off Hindu temples and then we can talk of "Government money"!

The poor farmer is waiting for rain, the least we can do is bribe the Gods - bribery is our national pastime. But I don't think 17 crores will be enough.

[QUOTE]In its first three years, when B.S. Yeddyurappa was at the helm, the government gave away 1397 crore to caste-based mutts. D.V. Sadananda Gowda, who succeeded Yeddyurappa last year, continued with it. The state budget for 2012-13 has set aside 1108 crore for mutts. Before the BJP came into power, only temples received government funds through the Muzrai department for their upkeep.
Interestingly, the grants to mutts have been budgeted under the head ?other social services'. The logic is that mutts need government support because they share the welfare objectives of the government by running educational institutions, hospitals, mass feeding programmes and mass marriages. What goes unsaid is that these institutions are run largely on commercial terms and are not exactly in need of money. The grants, therefore, are political investments of a different kind.

Yeddy is absolutely spot on when he says state is suffering (from drought) due to sins of his predecessors.
From that accurate logic, drought this year can directly be attributed to the 'sins' he and his corrupt govt. did. :)

Yeddy thinks God can be bribed because they need some money and will be very pleased with some ghee burnt in the yagna, because there is shortage of pure ghee in the Godland.

During my recent trip to India, I was surprised to see numerous BS ceremonies being conducted in the name of religion. I had been to Tirupati to attend a wedding. Though we did not travel up the hill for a darshan, we were offered to buy those seva tickets with a premium (A.K.A. black market) to get the darshan of the lord! To me, it beats all logic and common sense. To my surprise, several of them jumped on that offer. The guy who sold it, proclaimed himself to be "ardent" devotee.
