Need advice: Non-IT candidate seeking jobs in India before R2I

Post by r2inyc »

Hello Everyone,

I am planning to R2I in next 12 months after 6 years in US and wanted to get your feedback on my chances of landing with a sound job offer.

Background: I am the only son and being away from parents/family is something I don't wish to do any longer. In addition, I miss living in Mumbai despite all the traffic, pollution, and work culture differences etc. etc.

Profile: I have done my Masters in US and been working in Big4 consulting for 5 years. I am currently a Manager and my profile is typical consulting profile. I serve in the finance industry. Most of my experience lies in doing assessments for clients, advising them on how they can run their business better with regards to various business processes or at organization level. Partially I have also been involved in business development and sales as part of my role to sell work to our clients. So if I were to summarize my profile, it would neither be a core strategy consulting profile (like Mckinsey, BCG, Bain) nor a technology consultant profile (like Accenture, IBM, CapGemini). I am hoping since I am moving back to Mumbai, my financial profile should help in some way with Mumbai being a financial hub.

Problem: Though I have acquired some good skills in my 5 years here but being a consultant I have not developed any expertise in an arena. So I know something about everything but not everything about something. Also, I am not sure how the consulting environment is in India. I am also willing to move to industry jobs (banks, or finance division of companies from other industries). In addition, I feel that people in India especially at my level and similar profile are probably way more smarter than me because in India, people usually dont take BS and want the 'real' deal as compared to US where talking smooth gets you through the day. Again, this is from my experience and I could be wrong in entirety but thats what I have felt. Please correct me if you thing otherwise.

Seeking Solution: I need some advice on how I should be pursuing a job in India and what kind of salary I can expect. If it helps at all, my current salary is 120k, not sure if Indian employers use this in any kind of benchmark. Also, I want to know what kind of roles can I expect to get and whether my US experience will hold any advantage? If I can't get a good salary with my profile then please provide suggestions on how I can improve it to fetch one.

Thank you for your time and responses. I look forward to getting some valuable feedback.

Cheers.

Did you try Deloitte in Mumbai? They have a fair presence in Mumbai.

Actually, I haven't started to reach out to recruiters there because I want to make sure what kind of role and practice I would fit in and what kind of salary I should ask.

I thought it will be better if I have these answers before doing the leg work. Would you be having any idea how much does US big4 consulting experience counts in the indian consulting market?

Thanks for your response.

Most of the crowd here in IT industry. Though your profile sounds interesting, I never knew that Big 4 in that type of business too. I thought they are pure in Auditing-IT Consulting. Anyway have you tried to contact member oasis138, I think he recently moved to India and he works in some type of finance related job. -- Good luck

OP, based on the info, I am guessing you work in S&O? By masters I assume you've done your MBA here?mIf yes and yes to my questions , then yes - there's good demand for this skillet in India. 2 of the big 4 have shops in India. A couple of my friends in Big 4 have moved or are planning to move to their Singapore office (all have offices there) to be closer to India.

As for the practice, with 5 years exp and assuming you are at an engagement manager level, you should stick to the finance practice. Or alternatively, if you want to move to the business side, you can look at strategy roles in the finance industry.

I'm in the management consulting field. Moved back to India a couple of months ago. All of the big 4 firms have management consulting (strategy/operations) practices (some are doing better than others). Accenture and IBM as well (separate from Technology). There are a few boutiques as well. The market is still maturing for true strategy consulting but there is decent traction in the operations area.

Big 4 experience would be very much valued.

You could also look at captive shared service centers and maybe even BPO firms. They all have internal consulting / performance improvement groups. The captives pay pretty decent money as well, especially the financial services firms.
