We relocated to India two months back after having a plan that was going for years. One fine day, we finalized on the date and within a month we were out. Shipped all our stuff that were in good condition, booked the flight ticket. Had a quite tough time winding up things here but we did it. Things went as planned. Shipped goods delivered recently without any problem. So far so good.

Reached India. Family and friends did initial help. We are really fortunate on this. Managed to get kids admitted in to the school we were always looking forward. However, it was not an easy task. DW is taking care of kids. She quit her job before we made our move. She will start looking for a job, once kids/house is settled. That is how we planned and this too is on track.

I came back after a month to continue with my current job and looking forward for a job in India. Applying through every possible source, but there has been no progress at all. I have plans to go back after a certain period of time irrespective of it. However, there is some thought to continue the job until I get one as the current job pays me very well.

We have a fully paid off house and in all I might have 50L in cash. We never opted for any USD saving here. If I go without job, how should I invest this money so I can get the max. every month. Also, as the market seems down, does it make sense to go without Job. There are some question started to popping up in my head, what if getting the job takes time! It's very hard to stay without family but the circumstance if forcing to go through this.

I understand the pain of staying away from family for extended periods. If it becomes too much of a hassle to bear, then I would suggest you move back but, to be on the safer side, budget about 3 months to get a job in India after you land here. In this economy, it is going to doubly hard to find a job in India while you are sitting in US. There are many job seekers in the market today and most companies are on wait and watch mode. If you do decide to come back without a job in hand the "cooling-off" period of 3 months before getting a job in India can go a long way in sorting out your settling issues. You could even travel a bit and meet people you have not met for a long time. Regarding the loss of income for the 3 months, I wouldn't worry too much. Based on the limited info in your OP, I understand that you are not a rich NRI who returned but you are not in too bad a situation either. With a house paid off and both of you planning to work, you can have a decent life.

I think more info like city of return, your field of work, etc.. might help members to give you much more useful suggestions.

Either one of the spouse should be employed. Don't move until you find a job or wait till your spouse can find a job back in India.

It's tough to be away from family but keep in touch through skype. Just call wouldn't help.

Thanks all for the valuable feedback. I am looking for Technical Manager positions in Microsoft Technologies. I could not get in touch with any recruiter in my last trip to India. I contacted few of them after coming back, but have not heard anything from them yet.

@Guptaj - thanks for the genuine and straight forward answer. Really liked it. BTW, we never thought of buying a house in US thinking that it might become an obstacle in our planned move. Whatever we did was in India only.

I have few contacts in linked in. Some of them are in good position in HR. When I contacted them, they gave a positive 'Yes' answer, but have not heard any progress from their side.

If you had read this forum enough, the general consensus is, R2I without job is big no no.

For my benefit and perhaps useful to other also, Can you please clarify if one need to
1. Find a job offer in India from overseas before R2I or
2. R2I but have a job in India at some point after R2I or
3. Go to India, do not do a R2I(I mean loose associations to overseas, such as sell home, resign from job etc), once you land in job do then do an R2I.

I donot want kill this thread for job discussion but people have expressed their frustration searching for a job in India from overseas. I am not sure if there is generic answer, a lot depends on your skill set or your willingness to compromises for new role that you may get. If your professional aspirations win over your family life etc etc

What is so difficult to understand my one line sentence ?

It is mostly a frustrating job to find a job and go for interview and become scapegoat anywhere. Having a job in hand is one less thing to worry after R2I.
