Hi

I r2i'ed in 2008 to my hometown after 5 years of stay in canada and USA altogether. I hold a Masters degree from a reputed accredited US university with very good GPA. Everything was going smooth without any hiccups until I started my work. After my MS, immediately I secured a job in a huge MNC, Because of my job I had to move to somewhere else where, I hardly made any friends. I used to feel really lonely at times which, caused tremendous homesickness. I literally went under depression. Moreover I belong to a business family with a above average annual turnover so, finding a job and settling down in India was not my concern. Right now, I am earning double $$ than I used to while working in US. So, that was another reason which pushed me to r2i.

The real issue is My business is totally different in nature and doesn't require any kind of my engineering knowledge. So, Basically I am not too much satisfied with whatever I am doing. I am earning a lot of money but I always feel my life would have been better If I would have stayed back in USA.

Sometimes, I feel very much depressed and regret my decision and on the contrary sometimes I feel life is better here with my family and friends. Here, in India I have tremendous scope to expand my business and double my annual income but not sure if that will make me happy so, just not taking any further steps.

But yet again, I am skeptical about r2a, I feel what if after r2a again I face the same problem. One thing I know for sure that after experiencing both lii and lia I feel lia will give me better and relevant job which at least will give me mental peace. Now when I look back I feel I dint understand the true value of my job since, I got everything so easily.

When, I r2i'ed and joined my family business, people used to make fun of my decision which now I feel was correct.

I am sure your input in this matter will help me take the right decision which will not make me repent in the future.

Thanks for reading this gigantic post

If you are unhappy in the current situation, go to usa.

You are in a unique situation. You can always come back to an affluent state in India. Be happy there as long as you can and if start missing India; come back.

The US is clearly not for you, it was'nt a great experience the first time, and i doubt if it will be a good experience again. That being said, You already have a well set cash business in india, let that remain and have some smart people manage that one for you. You can pursue another venture and gain the challenged and satisfaction you need.

guptaj;475588Don't let the smart people take control of the whole thing and you just become a spectator, with the competition is businesses in India, it is so easy to kill family business.

Yeah thats very much correct. I am planning to use advanced surveillance tools (ip cameras etc to cope up with that

What about other aspects of life such as marriage, kids etc etc[/QUOTE
I am 29 and got married after r2i that is 2 years ago. I have a baby girl of 6 months. My wife is also keen to r2a but she doesn't know how lonely she might feel in US. My main concern is work satisfaction. It is hard to find the work relevant to my field of expertise in India. Moreover, I honestly want to go for PhD :) I really do feel like that. I made a mistake when I rejected my Prof's offer  and went for a job instead. Another mistake was resigning from the job before vast work experience (just about 2 years) I never took my life so seriously I just did what I felt like doing. I think I wasn't matured enough at that time:e. Now I understand why they say "Haste makes waste" Anyway, If I decide to r2a it is hard to get a job offer while in India. But I am damn sure my prof will be very happy if I join him for PhD.
But will it be a good idea to pursue PhD? I don't know right now. But now I don't wanna take any at-random decisions. So, giving it a deep thought.

Now, from the time I took control of my business the sales has been consistently increasing it is now 1.5 times the previous one. Moreover, I also feel that all the efforts that my dad took to grow our business should not go in vein because I am an eyewitness to all his dedication towards the company. Thats why I am really in a big dilemma. I know I can go back to US any time and pursue my passion but should I go? will it be running away from my responsibilities these are the questions I need to find answers to.

I am sure your suggestions/comments will help me in this. Thanks all

I am pretty much in your same shoes father doing well established business(retail shops) in India. Came here for MS graduated around
the early 2000 recession when job market was down so decided to go back to take over the family business. After reaching India however I had this guilt I couldn't work atleast for few years in IT also folks around me had the same questions what the hell you doing here(shops) this is not your field yap yap. Also paid from Dad's pocket for some college fees. So decided to work for sometime atleast to repay him what was spent .So I joined an IT service company and within two years was back in US. However the growth was very limited being in service company also the salary was less compared to my peers who got jobs directly after
MS here in US. Also due to visa restrictions could not switch. So I was not really gaining anything after coming back financially .There were no savings . I am pretty sure I would have made more money in business than here in US.

As a side note got married and have a son now here in US.We are planning to R2I end of this year with the intention to take over the family business. This was something which was decided earlier.Atleast now I will not have the guilt I never worked in my field. But time would tell how I would strive in business.
My advise to you is that PHD would take a while more than 4-5 years. Do you have siblings who are currently helping your dad. Also with a new job not sure if you can start from where you left last time due to this gap in between.
I guess it would be harder for you to manage business if you plan to take over at a later point. Is that your ultimate goal.

Seen this so that is one of the reason planning to join him at the earliest before it is too late or someone else take control. Do you mind sharing what kind of business is it retail shops. May be we can exchange some ideas.
