Does anyone R2I to protect their investments/ inheritance ?

Post by Vroom »

I met this guys at a dinner party at friend's place this weekend !! Apparently he's returning back to India for good APR'13 :-) After a few drinks I asked him what's your reason to R2i and was expecting a usual reply. However I just got the opposite and his reply was he's going back to protect his inheritance ( Not business, just inheritance I.E, 95% Real Estate/5% rest ) This guy was very clear that he's doesn't want to live in India permanently but is scared that his inheritance needs to be protected ? At this moment I just wished him "All the Best" and focused on gulping down more beers. After few more drink I again bumped into him and we started discussing on this plans. So we discussed on specifics and he thinks the market value of his investments/inheritance is about 15 C and having nightmares that if he doesn't look after it might be a waste. I am sure there are many NRI over the years who have invested in India and are they really scared about looking after their investments/Inheritance ?

Keeping Indian RE prices in mind and the kind of scam which goes around....one does need to be very cautious about investments, unless you have some trustworthy relative/person looking after your properties on regular basis.....so I think if he himself has to take care of his properties, his concerns are very legible...keeping in mind the value is around $3 Million....

Agreed but would someone decide to give up the lifestyle and go back to his hometown (Tier 2 city )? He made it clear that he will not be working but has plans to establish a passive income stream ( Building a portfolio of Rental properties / passive investments in firms/ etc ). Is it really worth to go to protect 3Million/15C ? Its noted that making 3 Million $$$ is not easy but still .....

Any asset needs to be safeguarded, if its over a certain (risk taking) threshold, inheritance, gift or otherwise. Be it in Timbuktu or Manhattan.

I think he has a great plan...and what makes you think $3M assets will not give him any lifestyle he wants(that too in Tier-2 city)....you should ask yourself, will you lose $3Million just to be in USA(may be you dont have that kind of asset and jealous or have much much more than that and $3M not much for you)? If yes, you better off getting Green Card based on investment(i think you need to put only $1M for that)....so again, no point losing $3M just to be in USA(thats plain stupidity)

Frankly I dont have that kind of assets. Because you pointed it out now you making me feel jealous ... nahh ... I am just thinking WHAT IF I had and will I go ? Becuase I know few other guys who will inherit much more than that but they clearly want to bring those assets here :-)

It may not be true. He may be considering R2I depending on the passive income that could be generated from 15Cr.

Declaring that You will consider R2I in US friend circle is like opening can of worms:) You have to defend and justify it till you do it. The topic keeps coming back to you in each and every meet whether you like it or not and want to put it in back seat till that happens.

Maybe that's why I am surprised. People I know who have been here (Australia )for 10+ years don't even talk about going back to India. I am sure there are exceptions but "Commoners" don't real talk about R2I. For the record they are happy living here !!! But for me its the dilemma and the thought of not sharing with friends here is kind of depressing LOL
