The Essense Of A Job: America, India.

OP: Your depression is the issue here and you have to find means to beat it. I think we all have the same frustrations in our professional lives, just as you've expressed, but I doubt any of us would consider quitting the US and work in India rather...the work environment is brutal there. If you have little to no expectation from your professional life/career, then working in India might work. If you care for your career and you want to see yourselves grow proportionately to the effort you put in, India won't help and your depression will catch-up to you sooner than you think. I can see you're confused, but you must figure out if your depression is job related (as your post seems to suggest) or India related (missing people, things in India, etc) - maybe you could try spending extended amount of time in India (as a fellow member suggested) to see if that helps beat your depression.

There are some things in life that you cannot change. The sooner you accept, it is better for you and your family. 99% of the population think about all the above that you have mentioned, especially regarding work at some point in their life. It does not matter what level they are. Engineers want to be managers, managers want to be directors, directors want to be VPs and VPs realize that the sacrifice they made is not worth it and want to spend more time with their family.

I think a lot of posters above have given good suggestions. If you dont already, try working out / exercise. Working out is something that will really help alleviate a lot of stress problems. Nothing like starting your day with a run outdoors.

I agree with your observation of Corporate America (with a few companies being exceptions). You can take "small company" out of your first point because I have noticed in companies of all sizes. Standard of living is very high in the US and it doesn't come without a hectic work life IMO, greed of CxOs and shareholders makes it even worse. Immigrants without (extended) family in the US face more issues because work becomes primary focus area a lot of the times without enough social life.

I don't think r2i is solution to work problems because I have heard of crazy work environment in India as well. But it's possible that with r2i, change in environment can move your focus away from work to other social activities and help stay away from depression.
