Rbee, RRS - what are you making for this diwali? I don't know what to do... so checking here. Maybe repeat of last year? This is the time of year when I keep searching for Manjula's kitchen, bhavana's kitchen and then come back to reality to my kitchen ..... there's nothing : (

SC's ban seems cruel. Control selling rockets, educate public on noise pollution near elder care nursing homes, limit number of hours etc reasonable but total ban when kids eagerly look forward to Diwali's 3 days for whole year seems very unreasonable. Even with all noise pollution measures, environmental concerns, CA's Disney Land, Great America theme parks conduct fireworks regularly and on all major holidays.

Anwesha, not decided what to prepare for Diwali. I am unusually sad this week with LV shooting, destruction due to wild fires, Tesla firing workers without notice, equifax hacked again, no interest in following even NFL etc. Hope Diwali clears my gloominess. Wish you and your family, a very happy Diwali.

don't worry about kids. Schools have ingrained in their mind very heavily that crackers cause pollution. My son doesn't even allow me to burn them forget about burning himself. This ban may appear harsh but it's a need of the hour. After diwali or during diwali it becomes difficult to talk as you are inhaling so much smoke.
Pollution in delhi ncr is really bad. It's reducing quality of life and causing life threatening diseases. For kids and elderly it can be fatal.
Unfortunately this ban came too late for shop keepers who had already purchased the inventory worth crores. So as with other things in India ban will be ignored and crackers will be burnt indiscriminately. Pollution will sore and cause havoc.
Only saving grace will be weather. This year diwali is 1 month earlier than previous years. So air movement will probably disperse the pollutants quickly. Last year they remained in air for 7-10 days.
Fortunately crop burning this year will not coincide with diwali. That will also keep the pollution low post diwali.

For people living in delhi ncr pollution had become a silent killer earlier. Now its a pandemic. Kids less than 1yr old are put on nebulizers. They were done earlier also but now the quantum has increased multifold.

Unfortunately all political parties are unable to come together to find a solution and supreme court has to intervene.

While you are in the land of plenty do not miss the opportunity to witness good firework show. You may never find that in India. Happy Diwali to everyone and their families.

Supreme court needs to come strictly on folks who really cause pollution throughout the year, not against folks who burst fire crackers for few hours

Until now, many were pointing to bursting of crackers (a norm during Diwali) as the main cause of the severe air pollution, but images published by NASA suggest that burning of crops in the neighboring states of Punjab and Haryana could be the biggest reason why the air quality in the world?s most polluted city refuses to clear.

Here's the crux of the judgement from Mi Lords.

lack of scientific certainty should not be used as a reason for postponing measures to prevent environmental degradation

Absolutely.

Last week, I read an article that compares number of cigarettes to crackers. X number of cigarettes per chikri, Y per bomb and so on.

My arguments is that may be ten million cigarettes are smoked every day in Delhi. Why SC does not ban cigarettes manufacturing and/or selling?
