very interesting. I always believed in it. I thought my r2i was successful since ( partly and I would rate my happiness in India at 7/10), since I gave up my green card thinking having a plan b will influence me adversely.

Do you really need a plan b?
Do you really need a plan b?
Reading the title of the thread on the results page, I was wondering why the esteemed doctor needs plan b....as in the emergency contraception. :)

Contingency plans are typically done with the same goal in mind. One can have a main plan and one or more contingency plans, but both aimed at the same goal/target objective.
In the instance of R2I, if the goal is to reach and settle the shores of India, then staying back in the US is a different and contrary goal.
In the instance of R2I, if the goal is happiness, then if staying back in the US also could result in the same happiness for someone, the goal is not compromised by an alternate plan and there could be many plans to reach the specific goal.
What is one's goal?

Good article, I also read in this book that picking from one of the choices reduced the happiness with that choice and a longing to back to the other choices compared to no choice at all. More the choices, less is the happiness with that choice.
Thinking, Fast and Slow: Daniel Kahneman:
But having a plan B is in our nature and it gives us so much comfort to the mind. I think our brain is always trying to improve the odds. Also we fear failure disproportionately than we enjoy success. That also may be one of the reasons for this behavior. We don't mind paying higher insurance than the odds deserve for this reason.

It's all in the mind. Not thinking about backup plan and early exit is the key here, not having a backup plan. I think it also depends on the risk profile of a person. I am a person who will be willing to take more chances and show full potential in a task when I have a fall back net.
