Assigment in Santa Monica

Post by rmandy »

Hi friends
I got assignment in Santa Monica and my company asking me to move from East Coast ..
No school kids.

Any help regarding the place..Is it a place for longterm living?

I have to make a quick decision.

Your inputs are apreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I would move in a blink. Santa Monica is closer to beach and closer to LA. You can get out of shitty winter and snow of east coast. What more do you want? Only concern could be your expenses will go up.

Without school going kids you will be placed well. I would certainly recommend living close to work as traffic and commute would be crazy. Santa Monica is very densely populated. Homes are expensive, but tons of condos and apartments are available. I have visited several friends who have lived around Venice Blvd. There are several quads near Venice blvd and Pico blvd that are rentals and condo/townhomes. They are less expensive if you get away from the ocean (obvious). Very cosmopolitan, multi cultural, tons of restaurants and things to do through out the year. You are going to be very close to UCLA, downtown, and Artesia with a large Little India. You will find tons of Desis who have been living here for generations. If you move South (East of 405) it is affordable (Culver City, Mar Vista). North of Sunset blvd and west of 405 is where all the celebrities live. Normal IT/salaried peeps cant live there.

Try to explore places around Orange county for living if you have school going kids, I did live in LA before moving to CLT and felt I moved to a village initially . Great cosmopolitan place and you get to explore a lot. As a side note as others have specified commute and cost of living is something you will need to consider.

I moved from NJ and for 5 yrs lived in LA with office at Santa Monica.
No regrets; missed it after leaving.
As suggested ask for cost of living differential raise.

I'd say great for long term living great too - house prices high - but then property tax low.

Highly recommend.

Consider Culver city for living as you may find lots of desis there as well as Indian restaurants etc. If you can drive a little down south, try Torrance which has a substantial Indian IT population and is generally a nice and safe place!
Artesia (which has Little India on Pioneer Boulevard) and Cerritos however are the hub of LA South Asians.

Both LA and Orange counties have huge number of Indians. And Santa Monica has the best, most happening pier you can find.

Lots of sunlight down here. If you use the federal incentives and go solar its free electricity for ever :) (after you forget the fact that you spent all that money on going solar)
