Chennai school admission 2018

Post by RamyaV »

Hello, we are looking to relocate next year. What is the best way to go about school admission? Not surprisingly they don't reply emails! I would prefer Annanagar...I think narrowing down the area would greatly help in short listing schools. Would love to connect with someone who has moved this year!

We shifted to Chennai this year(OMR area) with two school going kids under 6. For school admission, I spoke on phone to the school officials sometime in Aug/Sep last year to understand admission procedures and timelines. My parents also visited the school in Dec to speak with school manager regarding the same. I believe the best way to start would be to have some relative/friend of yours personally visit the school and gather the required information.

I moved in 2010. This might be a dated information. Please cross check with folks who moved recently.

Schools in Anna Nagar & surroundings (all CBSE)

DAV (boys and girls) - they don't even allow parents to come here the gate to talk. Unless you are trying for LKG or lower, forget this school
Spartan - Check if they have got permanent CBSE affiliation first.
Chennai Public School - Probably the going rate might be around 1 to 1.5 Lakhs (corporate fee a.k.a donation)
Schram Academy - again 1 to 1.5 Lakhs, although you will have to go to Maduravoyal for higher classes (lower classes are in Park Road I think)
Velammal - No clue but don't have a good opinion of this school.
Ravindra Bharathi - No idea but I think they do ask for donation.
Dayasadan Agarwal Vidyalaya (Nerkundram) - Relatively new school. Must be easier to get admission I suppose.

As the previous poster mentioned, ask your relatives / friends to collect information by visiting various schools. You will not get answers on the phone or email.

I dont know about Chennai specifically. But dont go by brochures, online info and phonecalls. Visit them. And the first thing I would check if it is a worthy school or not is do they have a decent playground? If they dont, they are just into money making. Beware of such schools.

Not many schools (including my kid's school) have anything called decent playground. That's the sad state here (if you are looking for admission for your kid in prime area in Chennai)

None of the schools from the list I provided below have a good playground.

Thank you for your detailed response. Currently none of these schools are on my shortlist even though they did come up in my research!
