Read before you R2I

Post by MastanAgain »

Read this blog post honestly and ask yourself if you still want to R2I- because it's this culture and day to day life that you will return to.

Kill the Indian First

My own belief is that there's nothing virtuous or a reason to be proud of some place just because it is "home" or "where you came from". Life is about progress and making yourself a better person. Going back to India is by all means a horrible downgrade and step back.

Wow! Thanks for the enlightenment! So should you run away from India or Indians? But wait a minute, how do you run away from the Indian within you?

You make it sound like a cowardly thing to run away, but sometimes running away is the only sane response.

how do you run away from the Indian within you?

By making the effort to unlearn and retrain your mind. Start with questioning everything and see the world without your Indian biases and conditioning.

Useless racist article. Do yourself a favor and erase it from memory even if you read it. While some of it is true, no returning Indian will become a victim of the stereotype.

[QUOTE]
Gopinath, thanks for your very insightful writing. I am one of those Indians (in Mumbai) who is constantly reminded of all that you have said, everyday of my life spent here, gnashing my teeth in frustration and rage at this madness. I call it “a free-for-all society in free fall”. Those who harp that the few should not be held as an example of the rest are living in jingoistic denial. The fact that they don’t seem to see or accept what’s obviously and hopelessly wrong all around us could signify the extent to which they are a part of it. I dread moving out of the home or office, girding my loins to do battle in the streets to get ahead without conflict or curse. This uncouth and uncivilised behaviour is the norm and not the exception.

I often cite Thailand as a perfect example of what perhaps is wrong with us. Why is it that, with so many similarities, like political strife and corruption in the police force, does this small nation manage its affairs so splendidly compared to India? Could it be that, unlike the Thais, we do not see ourselves as nationals, i.e. Indians? We are Gujaratis, Marwaris, Hindus, Muslims etc – everything except Indian. We neither believe in nor share a nationality — that’s used only to identify ourselves to the world outside.

Well Thailand is not that perfect as he sees it on the beaches! Shouldn't he read about how the military usurped power, and how minority mailings are treated!

Not sure about Thailand but I agree completely regarding India.
Main reason that lot of people don't R2I or return back to USA is because of Indians and NRIs(including me) take very long time to realize that.

Welcome back Mastan bhai :-)

This is one of my favourite articles and it was also published in the Open Magazine (http://www.openthemagazine.com/article/art-culture/kill-the-indian-first). I think I may even have shared it on this forum. I love it when Indians open-up and write honestly about themselves.

I think it is only the Westernised Indians who are critical of India. Regular Indians don't seem to have a problem, they just "adjust".

My situation is a bit different and I still have an attraction to India but that attraction can prove fatal if you don't know how to do things here.

You must turn to Nirad Chaudhuri, V.S. Naipaul, Aakar Patel and Manu Joseph for more delicious anti-Indian writings.

If you have some intellectual bones in your body and are interested in a deeper understanding and defence of Indian culture, you can turn to this author (http://satyanrtam.wordpress.com/).

It's not perfect but it's close. I went to every country in SEA and tried to get a feel for each culture, and Thailand really is the best out there.

What's wrong with the military usurping power when so called "elected governments" can't run the country well enough? I've always been a proponent of military rule in India. It's actually the only hope that India has to ever shape up. If they start beating and jailing the local population for littering like they do the Kashmiris for throwing stones, things will clean up very quickly. Besides, the armed forces are probably the only entity left in India with the discipline and knowhow on how to run anything efficiently.
