My cousin is planning to return back to India too and we were discussing the Plus and minus and also about this forum. He feels if one gets a salary match, life will be awesome in India. ultimately, one comes abroad to earn better, and going back with a salary which is worth what one gets in America (hypothetically) Hence better chances of a successful r2i.One can afford all the luxuries plus live in our own country.
How many go back that way and has a successful r2i?
Will r2i succeed if you have a salary match???

That will solve problems money can solve. But there might be other problems that money cannot solve, which you will have to think about. And living in US also has its benefits as well as difficulties. Going back and forth is the nature of mind, some call it buyer's remorse. If you live in US you want to be in India and if you are in India you want to be in US.
There is no final answer for your question about success in my opinion. People are bound by time and space constraints. Success and Happiness is in the mind. Coveting and acquiring objects might give you happiness for that instant, but that need not be always. Your mind will start coveting again for things you haven't yet acquired.

Money solves many issues but when it comes to R2I, it doesn't help. Let's say you get that salary match and you move to India. You will most certainly try to re-create your western way of life in India. This leads to more disappointments. This is where your mind plays its tricks on you. The mind tells you all that is wrong with India and all that's right about the western world. Just like it tells you about what sucks here in USA.

In my opinion and as correctly pointed out above by fellow member Kumm, R2I will succeed if and only if you want it to succeed. Otherwise, it won't.
Will r2i succeed if you have a salary match???
It really IS in the mind. If one's priority is money, and if that alone is the highest priority, then that is what will bring him happiness. We have heard all those nice sayings.. "Money makes many things", "it makes the world go around" and others such as "Money is not everything.." and the one "it is the ONLY thing", "money does not buy happiness but I love the luxuries it helps me buy, even if I am miserable otherwise..".
Since your cousin's goal is to make the same amount of money in India as he does in the US, at least in the beginning he will be happy. Once that need is fulfilled, other priorities may creep higher up and even if he may be satisfied with the money he would be making, it may become increasingly difficult to ignore the other factors that affect one's peace of mind. You didn't mention anything about his family, kids, their ages, schooling etc. How can money alone address all those things? What does his spouse feel about returning home, his parents? This time, I assure you, money is NOT everything.

Yes indeed! Your cousin is right. India is a really expensive place nowadays esp. metro cities. So a commensurate package will go a long way in ensuring you have a relatable standard of living (Ala west). Of course, the quality of roads, air pollution etc. wont change but within your private quarters such as a well maintained apartment complex, a safe and hygeinic school, good quality hospitals, shopping/social life hangouts and vacations, you can ensure a good time for yourself! Needless to say a staff such as maids and drivers to pamper you as well.
In fact, a lot of people say that if you have the money, you can live like a king in India.

Absolutely.
I R2Ied without a salary. I did not come back for money. I came back for friends. I, of course, could do with a little more money but I am a happy bunny and I do not need to keep telling myself that.
Both of my sons live in the west, but I am happy not because of that. The time I spend with my son in the UK and some friends (yes, friends) I left behind in the UK, I also enjoy and usually very happy over there.
Oh yes, I am also happy when I am with my other son, even though he lives in USA. I enjoy the fresh air, delicious fruits, the land of honey and plenty, the huge malls with huge parking lots(sadly without even one tree) and most of all the wild expanse of the golf courses. They are huge, bigger than any in India, and why not. USA is so much bigger than India. They probably have the biggest airforce and the biggest navy. And the strongest too.
The problems, I have, can not be solved with money. Asthma, short height, lack of a singing voice and I can keep going with that so I shall stop. But I do not let that come in my way of being happy and enjoy the company of my friends, most of them Indians.
I even enjoyed Africa. To be more specific, Kenya and Tanzania. My sons and his friends were going on a safari. My son's friends are great. They have made me their friend as well and invited us to join them. We had a terrific time. None of the other guys had their parents, only one girl had brought her father who lives with her. But yes, we had a whale of a time. Not the blue whale.

You can count me in that category. I returned to India in April 2014 from the UK but as other members have rightly mentioned it is not money but no comparison of LIUK & LII which has worked well for my family. We had a great time in India before relocating to the UK, we thoroughly enjoyed our life in the UK for 7 years and now we are enjoying our life in India. We haven't thought about future, but I hope we will continue to embrace and accept gift of life wherever it takes us next.

Money is definitely a critical thing. If you do get an offer that matches US, that also shows that you and your skills are valued and the company is willing to pay a premium. I would say, those two would make me move. Rest of the issues are mostly out our hands - pollution, noise etc.

You can get a match if you R2I as an expat. Eventually they will put you on the Indian payroll.Otherwise I dont ever see a match happening. A software engineer making 120,000 USD in USA will not get 72 Lakhs in the same company when he takes an intra-company transfer regardless of how much critical skills he has. If he is someone thats setting up office in India at an exec level they will get an expat package with fat perks. Regular dudes in US at a non exec level I dont think they can get a match. Please correct me if I'm wrong and if someone can prove me wrong, I will R2I again if I can get my current pay in Bangalore and move as an expat :)
