Hi,

Longtime reader of this wonderful forum.

I and DH: GC. Kids: Age 7 & 4- USC.
LIA : 17 years.
Don't own a house in USA.
No family/blood relations in USA.
Investments - Real estates in a Indian metro city and B class towns.


DH been offered hard to pass Executive role in a bank in Indian prime city. Salary would be not be comparable to private IT firm..but it comes with intangible benefits- car, house, maid, health care, pension, yearly international travel etc...
He was doing this stint past year on 'short term' basis(without the above mentioned benefits) with the institution and he enjoyed working there. I was with kids in USA while he was making impacts and revolutionizing banking systems in his role.
Our plan was after the stint he would come back to USA and find a job matching his recent experience. We had no idea they would present a permanent offer.

Both sets of parents will be happy to have us in any corner of India.
Every year we visit our home place in India. Kids are exposed to Indian environments.
We travel by Indian public transportation as much as we can. Husband drives the car(non automatic) in India trip. I drive the automatic though. We do regular grocery and household shopping for both set of parents on every visit. So I guess I am aware of dealing with Indian street vendors :-)
During the visits my kids had one major need- need for cool air at night. Places we stayed mostly had ACs, and for homes that do not have AC, we had to put multiple table fans for kids. Although kids never asked for it, we sensed they had troubled sleep with humidity and sweat.


Brain says do not pass up on a stabilized government job, but heart has too my dilemmas-

1. Will kids adjust schooling. DD is into arts/creativity and dancing. DS is still evolving.
2. We cannot R2A if things do not work in India due to forfeiting GC.
3. For colleges, I think there is possibilities for kids coming to US for undergrad and postgrad.
4. Stable future for kids, moving back and forth will not help them.


What would you do if you were presented with this offer?

I am looking for third person's perspective here.

Take the offer. Kids are young and will certainly adjust and flourish. Such career opportunities are hard to come by. Plus you have a family in India and no roots in USA. So there is no dilemma.

Apply for reentry permit....that should take care of GC for couple years and R2I :)

Good point. And even in case you have to r2a you will be more at peace because you know you have tried r2i. Otherwise you might regret not availing the opportunity for life long. Once the kids grow up it's harder to r2i.

Its not clear on how many times one can apply for a Re-Entry permit. The more one applies, it makes it harder to prove ties to the US and may be perceived as 'abandoning the GC' unless there are some extreme scenarios (medical conditions ??). One has to be present in the US to apply for REP (first time and the renewal) and do the bio-metrics which generally is a month or two after applying. For travel back within one year, no REP is required...one can come back on their GC.

Good luck. It may be worthwhile to consult a immigration attorney.

I am on my third if that would help. The advantage that I have is my wife and kids are USC.
