Inspite of all it's nationalistic talk , the government has not done much to allocate money for defence modernisation.

One really misses Rajiv Gandhi , who was the only prime minister to have really allocated more than 3 percent of the GDP for defence and was really interested in making India a major military power . Rest have paid only lip service to military modernisation and nothing else.

Ever since bofors scandal, very few 155 mm guns have been bought for army. That is in last thirty years . Rafale jets---only 36 instead of the planned 126 + 56 .

Of course, only the BJP government is not to blame for this . But it's claim to nationalism is diluted because of this . Later congress governments after Rajiv Gandhi also reduced defence expenditure but at least they were not claiming to be nationalists.

Every year the defence budget disappoints and I remember Rajiv Gandhi. This has been happening for nearly 30 years. And I don't even have a habit of drinking to forget my sorrows....sigh....

Is India a poor or rich country? Instead of proving good infra or education, why spend on defense?

It?s a different matter that this govt does not know how to manage economy and toys with it like a demon inflicted monkey!

From the somewhat selfish perspective of a 'foreign' investor, I wonder if the reintroduced long term capital gains on stocks will have a negative impact on the market.

It would likely not impact me personally, because I would get a tax credit for that anyway against US taxes, but if other Indian investors are impacted, it could be negative for the stock market.

I hold various US based mutual funds and ETFs that invest in India. If there is a capital gains tax in India, the funds would likely have to pay it (I wouldn't expect too many capital gains in indexed ETFs anyway), and would pass on the capital gains and foreign taxes paid to me. I could then take a tax credit against that on my US return (although there are some caveats).

If I held stocks directly in India, and sold them, and had to pay LTCG on them in India, I could similarly take a credit for that on my US return.

1) We have a defence minister who walks to a galli restaurant to eat idlis and a PM who takes no cut in defence deals. So we get better bang for the buck compared to regimes where there were "taxes" for purchasing weapons.
2) Shouldnt the % of what GDP# also matter?

Because an iddli eater in a Galli restaurant is forbidden from taking corruption?
Already there are indications of ha my panky on the fighter jet deals and we may be getting worse deal than what MMS negotiated. At this point of time, one cannot trust Modi to get a good deal for India.
Same like we got a worse off nuclear deal, GST, house buying protection under Modi. Modi took out all consumer Or nation benefiting part and made it baniya favorable!

Your baniya comment deserves a response on the same logic as that highlighted. Are they banned from getting benefitted or are they not citizens of India even if we believe what you say is true? Or are we suppsoed to benefit only Khashoggis and Quattrochis?

Rest of your post is just imagination of pappu's party or like the 2cr suit of Modi:) Wonder where u got that number of 2 cr, news reports put it at 10L or something.
