Options when job search in IT fails

Post by am1728 »

I was browsing through a few posts to get a sense of how hard the job search in India could potentially be for someone like me (35-year-old with about 10 years worth of experience in the US with a master. A lot of the posts were relevant to IT industry. However, I am not confined to IT exclusively and hence open to other options. Along these lines, what experience, if any has anyone got w.r.t the following options (regardless of the pay):

- Working online on sites such as upworks as a programmer.
- starting an online business such as selling software you develop or selling online courses
- trying to get a job in core engineering in a prestigious organization like ISRO
- working as a teacher in a reputed institute such as IIT/NIT
- trying to find work in a top tech company such as Google or MSFT.

I mention these options because of either the quality of work or the prestige or the free time and flexibility they may provide for you to do your own stuff. But what remains to be seen is if it's any easier getting these roles when usual options in IT fail. Btw, my personal situation: I am married with a kid with enough savings to live in a tier1 city for just over a year comfortably.

IT job is still the most sensible option. Your job search cannot fail. You may have to settle down for a lower salary. There will definitely be companies wanting to hire you just for your experience and exposure. There are lot of roles where people are just people managers and do nothing else.

Tap into your network, that is the best way to look for a job.
