Hi,
I am staying in a 1 BHK rented apartment in WA state. our leasing office said that, in an 1 BHK as per WA law only 3 people can be on lease. currenly we are 3 and next month my other child is coming to US and we want to continue in the same 1 BHK. But i can't put one child on lease. Is this OK?
Any consequences I need to face if the apartment people come to that 4 are staying in 1 BHK. what steps they can do.
I know when parents visit , many are accomodating in 1 BHK with 4 to 5 people. but i want to make sure.
Thanks in advance and appreciate any suggestions/inputs.

Its been ages since I have leased. Does one have to write the names of all members living in the house, in the lease. It should not be a big deal, maybe more of an inconvenience for you. In this economy, all savings come in handy.
All the best.

Thanks Hyderabadi for your quick response.
the person has to be on lease in order to get any mail on his/her name. As long as they are not aware how many are staying, that's not a problem.
my concern is , if they come to know will they take any action.. if yes what kind of?

Yes, the people living in an apartment premises have to be in knowledge of the company. As per the rules and also due to Terrorism, Security of other people living in premises, Crime, Theft, Violence, Fire, Earthquake, etc. In case of cops arriving and asking then what to say.
But, I have seen Indians living on month-to-month sometimes 4 or 5 and apartment company is not aware. There is no question of mails as postman delivers it. May be people from other nationalities might also be doing this.
Sometimes, people (friends and relatives) come and go and stay for a week or two. But, usually, college going people, Desi consultants – might be 5-7 people in an apartment by Desi Contracting company have an arrangement to save money. Harmonious relationships and peace, no noise, the general civility, etc are the key with conformance to laws.
But, if some crime or anything of serious nature happens then people could be in jeopardy. It’s the duty of the person who is on lease to share the information with the rental company else he would be liable as per terms and conditions in contract. By Law, people living in an studio / 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 bedroom apartment complex have to be on lease with telling who is in their premises as long as one is renting. Even if you don't rent; own the house it's better to comply with laws. Other thing room mates are strangers / dear friends or family members? In case something goes wrong; though chances are rare then who will be at fault legally and also for arriving at mutual agreement. They may take action don’t forget who is at mistake, here and who is withholding information and the contract supports them. Other legal grounds also exists as lawsuit by other tenants for their security, neighbors in adjoining areas.

There are HUD guidelines, town ordinances, Fire codes, and lease conditions which all specify the number of people on per room and square footage basis.
Should you have more than allowed number of people in your apartment, the worst that could happen if the apartment owners become aware is that they may serve you a notice to rectify situation or vacate. There also may be extra charges if there is such specified in your lease.

I know I am not contributing to OP's question. But reading this post, reminds me of a comment our neighbour (German) made when we first met them.
She said... "People here in USA will buy big houses. 3 bedrooms, 4 bedrooms, 5 bedrooms. Only 2-3 people will be living in it. Irony is that when their parents visit them from out of state, then the parents will stay in a hotel. 5 bedroom house can not accomodate parents for a weekend". How true !!
I have seen many such cases.
Just sharing.

Yes Desi, I know what you are saying.. Mine was just a sarcastic comment. Someone has a 5 bedroom house. Husband, wife and one kid live in it. When husband's parents visit town, the house can not accomodate them.
Ofcourse the house has enough space. However, "dil" has no room left !! was the point. Sorry for being off topic. I was just sharing..

Such behavior is not limited to "people here in USA". It is more a change that happens with time. It is beginning to be felt in many countries. It is happening in India and being felt by those of Indian origin too. Right now in the Indian context, it seems to be limited to siblings visiting siblings' houses.
