55k is really on the low side in any part of USA with all the sacrifices. Planning a kid with 55k salary, my personal suggestion is wait for it or have your wife working.

Its good enough for single guy starting out. I think you can manage with 55K in the TX area but no driving fancy cars, or excessive indulgence. Having said that it is on the lower end for a family but manageable.

Hi dell
I do not drive fancy cars and have already finished US tour twice, have currenlty 30 to 40K of saving and do not need to send a peny back home as parent are well to do. Just getting worried as planning for a Kid so will be able to manage in this income or not and as GC process have started so getting confused that should wait for it or return to India?

There are few things to consider:
1. It seems that you are planning for a kid in US -- generally speaking, he/she would have US citizenship. I have seen lot of folks aspiring for US citizenship for their kids (though I am not totally convinced). But if you want your kid to have US citizenship, then I would advice you to stick around for some more time.

2. Regarding 55K salary, it all depends on your field/location etc. As many people mentioned, it is somewhat on lower side but still manageable. With a kid, you can still manage but then, will not have much saving etc [ I am assuming your company provides good insurance - check out max-out-of pocket expense for the yr). The other option is to change jobs with higher salary. I would advice you to do this only after I-140 approval from current company. With I-140 approval, you can port the priority date (but your new employer will have to start over again i.e. file PERM, I-140 and later I-485 etc)

Why wait?? Go for it dude. Nothing can replace the pleasure of having a kid. Don't wait. Start today. Now!!!

Thanks for your suggestions, deep makes sense, but i wonder if I can get an employer who would do my GC process again after getting I140 approved?
@chakraan: my current monthly expenditure comes to around 2K in which we manage all rents 2-3 times eat outs and bill.
I would also like to know what should be the minimum salary to have a kid. Does it happen that the expenses shoot up really high if we have a baby.
