Travel Date close to Passport Expiry Date

Post by hope4best »

I've an Indian Passport and Green Card. My passport expires on October 2nd. I'm traveling to India between August 7th and 29th. When I went to the Emirates Airline website to update the Advance Passenger Info (API) the system didn't accept the input because the passport expiry date was not 3 months away. When I called the CS, I was told that the system indeed was correct but on my insistence she clarified with her Supervisor and advised I'm OK as long as I have a valid passport. Would there be a problem traveling close to the passport expiry date? Thanks!

nope.. You should have no problem at all ! I just went thru this and my passport expiry was 15 days of my entry back into U.S. Don't get too hazzled about API. Let them do some work in the airport. :-)

desipardesi thanks for sharing your experience. I'm sure it'd be helpful to someone someday, just like it's to me today, when they come here looking for the info.

BTW, I'm getting on the airplane with a copy of your response. Just kidding :-)

Hi,
I know it has been a while, but can you share your experience at the POE. I am in a similar situation. I have a GC. Bought tickets to leave from JFk to Delhi on July23rd and returning on Aug 28th from Delhi. Indian Passport expires on 7th october 2011. I emailed the Indian consulate in NY, got a response that i can expect to get the passport renewed in 6 weeks. So if i show up at the consulate tomorrow, 6 weeks from tomorrow is kind of tight :(

No questions was asked at POE (Washington DC). If you are a GC holder, you should have no problem.
Your entry to US is based on your GC and not on your validity of Indian passport. If you are have a US visa, then your I-94 will be stamped only till the passport expiry day. So you should have no issues, IMO

The Indian consulate - 6/8 week rule can be longer if your expiring passport was issued in India. Some rule that it need to be checked with the issuing office before it's renewed. So that's unnecessary stress for no reason. And it's next to impossible to get a response from them.

Hi, just to let you know, got the passport renewal done. Took a total of one week. I was kind of surprised at hearing the time frame from the person at the counter considering they just emailed me a day back saying it might take 6 weeks. Anyways, thanks for the comments
