Relocating to San Diego - need info
I have received a job offer in San Diego and would be moving soon. I have never visited SD and would like to know about where to rent. I have a family and would like to be near Mission Valley. Do any of the locals have any opinion on which areas are good and where to stay?

return2010,
Welcome to the best place on earth to live (away from home). Its truly a fantastic place to live.
Where to rent depends on various factors; school aged kids (good school district), budget for rent, distance to work etc. If you have school aged kids, Mission Valley may not be as attractive. I would explore North County (Carmel Valley, Penasquitos, Rancho Bernardo, Scripps Ranch, Poway etc.) if your commute to work is manageable.
PM me if you need more info.
Best of luck

The localities by the ocean are a lot of fun. The climate is 10 to 20 degrees to the better. Many homes do not have ACs in Delmar, La Jolla, etc. Pacific beach is located close to Mission Valley, and so is downtown. Rentals would be cheap in Clairemont Mesa, but I would not stay there. Santee is cheap as well, but can get very warm. Most Tech and biotech companies (read desis) are in Sorrento Valley, Carlsbad, and RB. Renting in La Jolla/UTC would be a good option. Schools, shopping, climate, all is good in La Jolla, reasonably close to Mission Valley.
I would double hvn2hm's recommendation of localities, if you do not mind living 45 mins of peak hour driving to Mission Valley. Good luck.
