EPF finally implements SSN

Post by b2b »

A National Social Security Number will be given to all Employee Provident Fund account holders. It is mandatory from next month and will usher a number of much awaited benefits to more than 30 million EPF account holders.

For further info

EPFO - epfindia.nic.in/for_employees.htm
SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER (SSN)

For those who have worked in India anytime or is working in India based employment - they will know the hassles in current system in getting PF withdrawn / transferred.

Provident Fund (PF) account holders will soon be able to access their accounts via phone and the net. The NSSN number will be available on a card that can be utilised to settle PF and pension claims at any EPFO office and in case of a change of employment, a transfer of funds will not be necessary.

Your employers should soon initiate the process else you can contact regional PF offices.

I just saw this thread, hence reposting my question here.

Do you know if USC of Indian origin (with OCI) can contribute to VPF in India?

I'm planning to open an account in VPF (Voluntary provident fund) for the tax savings purpose and for the personal savings for the future.

I'm not sure if there is any Indian law that restricts opening and contributing into such accounts by OCI. Off course, I want to withdraw later J

details:
USC + OCI, lived in the US for 11 yrs, returned to India in April 2007
Thanks,

I guess you are referring to PPF (Public Provident Fund).

VPF is something you voluntarily allow to be deducted from your remuneration over and above statutory minimum and deposited in to PF. For this you dont need additional account than the one you would have with your employment.

AFAIK, any person resident in India can deposit into PPF / PF / VPF. Nationality does not matter. It is residence that is important (specially for opening new account).

B2B, Thank you for your quick reply.

Yes, I meant "voluntarily allow to be deducted from your remuneration over and above statutory minimum and deposited in to PF" .

Sorry, my question was misleading in opening a new account.

The information you have provided on NSSN and EPF is very helpful.

India is calling it SSN..

India should sign treaty with US to allow US to transfer the SS balance to PF next. It will help H1 holders and returning GCs..

May be the thread title can be changed to say SSN instead of NSSN.

Hi,

This is a absolutely fantastic news! I have always worried about my EPF money going into a black hole that I cannot track (unlike 401K in the US). Now, it seems that with SSN # tracking of monies in the PF account will become much more simpler, and so also the rest of the administration.

Regards,
R2I4C.
